Simple ( Stupid ) Oil Change Question

So I just completed my first oil change after picking up a 2017 Zl1 a couple weeks ago. Bought it was 2700 miles on it and didn't trust the dealer followed the necassary oil changes at 500 and 1500 miles so I figured I'd do it myself.

I was having a hard time reading the dipstick, in terms of seeing oil level obviously and I panicked thinking this thing was way low. Long story short I pulled the dip plug and probably 8-10 quarts poured out thank goodness and I refilled with just over 9 and 1/4 quarts to start and then subsequently top it off with small pours from there on.

The thing is.. I still can't see the oil level for shit on my dipstick

I imagine ( hoping ) this is operator error here. There are no leaks as I've checked several times now.

and 10 quarts is the right amount correct?

It’s not a stupid question. Yes it’s 10 quarts. However, some members have reported having to put slightly more (10.5) to get the oil level all the way to the top hatch mark. And then, if you don’t get a good drain you might require less than 10. Your method of adding 9ish and then feathering up to full is smart.

The oil can be difficult to see when new and clean on the dip stick. I like to roll the dip stick tip on a clean white lint free shop rag. The white rag shows me exactly where the oil is on the dip stick. Sometimes just holding the dip stick against the bright white rag helps bring the oil level into focus.

Everyone has their tips and tricks. This one is mine.

Appreciate the reply. A guy told me he puts 10 quarts in and then drives it for 10 minutes or so and then puts 2 more quarts in to "fill it completely"

That sounded excessive but with the dipstick issues i was having it made me second guess the 10 quart capacity

Wow 12 qts? I am in the majority that takes around 10.5 qts.

Does it say in the manual to change at 500 and 1500 miles? I may have read over it but just got mine and it only has 200 miles. Thanks in advance, having trouble using the search here with my phone

10 quarts is all you need. It drains into the pan VERY SLOWLY from the top of the engine. If you have added 10 qts and it's still short on the stick, then wait a few hours (or overnight) and check again.

what he said I've found works perfectly. When I read about people adding more than 10 qts, especially when the manual states 10 qts, baffles me...
Engine Oil with Filter
9.5 L
10.0 qt

Unless you precisely measure the oil coming out, you really don't have any idea how much to put in if you don't check the stick often when filling. It could need 9.5 quarts, could need 10.5 quarts, Or anywhere in between. On the race teams that I know from SCCA, they put in 1 quart less than the manufacturer specs for a dry filter change, and then put in 2 ounces at a time until it was mid stick. You just don't know how much is left In the engine On the initial drain.

Wonder how many actually precisely measure the oil coming out...for me, I put in 9 qts and then small amount from there. So far with 3 oil & filter changes, it's been between consistently 9.7 to 9.8 qts. Again, FOR ME is all I'm stating. I do check the next morning to see and so far, haven't needed to add anything. My dry sump Z06 usually required a slight amount more the next day. Of course, that's dry sump VS wet sump LT4. I was just stating that the manual states 10 qts...hope the factory would know how much it requires...

use 10qts with filter change and don't worry. Check the oil when the car is stone cold the next morning and confirm the oil level is in the hashmarks on the dipstick. Use your cell phone light for illumination to confirm the oil is in the correct range.
