Track > 1/4 Mile

I drive 11 miles (round trip for work) a day. All city driving and probably close to a dozen stop lights. I'm getting right at 13 mpg.

Some modded cars with tunes get higher mileage. Why? I they running them lean? The stock tune seems rich. Is there a reason it needs to be so rich?
14 avg Have seen 10 (after track day) and up to 22 (wife driving on road trip).

Leaner tunes have higher NOX emissions. true. but part of the story
high NOx can be seen with a rich miss or mix at idle when a air pump heats up the catts, which also produces high HC's causing part burnt fuel. ultra lean burn engines have lower emissions thats the idea behind direct injection, and the new type of catts..but a really lean tune with the older type cats will produce some NOx YES CORRECT NOx rises when temperatures go up, increased timing, high compression, large amounts over over lap,but arent modern times great !! The new engines designed for lean burning can employ higher compression ratios and thus provide better performance, efficient fuel use and low exhaust hydrocarbon emissions than those found in conventional gas engines. Ultra lean mixtures with very high air–fuel ratios can only be achieved by direct injection engines. The main drawback of lean burning is that a complex catalytic converter system is required to reduce NOx emissions. Lean burn engines do not work well with modern 3-way catalytic converter—which require a pollutant balance at the exhaust port so they can carry out oxidation and reduction reactions—so most modern engines run at or near the stoichiometric point. Alternatively, ultra-lean ratios can reduce NOx emissions ie LIKE THE GM ENGINES we get to have our cake and eat it too with the new LT1 thats the reason for the change in the motor from the LS wow just wait when the new LT1 style ZR1 ,and ZL1 motors comes out, talk about a huge power house, and still get mpg we can live with...
