Welcome to Mag Ride. It isn't free. $500 a strut isn't that bad IMO...

I work in the auto industry and I know all about "wear items" and how long they should last. They SHOULDN'T HAVE BLOWN in 44,000 miles. They might get weak, a little more bouncy maybe, but not both seals completely blown. I have been in the auto industry since 1993 so I have a little experience !!

44,000 is too soon. I completely agree.

Mine were the ones that went out at 60k. http://www.camaro5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=375263

They are shock absorbers not struts...if you're wondering what the difference is, the strut is covered under warranty, factory and extended and a shock absorber isn't, beside that I have no idea what the difference is. The front is labeled a strut in the service manual, however, I was told that the MRC cartridge may be classed as an absorber and therefore not covered. I was also told that its normal for them to wear out and it happens on other cars with the MRC just as often like the corvette, caddy and HHR, so its not just a ZL1 thing.
I think its just one of those things nobody budgeted for, so now I've added $2000 to my budget to replace front and back absorbers every 50-60k. I'd recommend to others to do the same especially if you have bad roads or track they car.

It is a strut and that's how it is listed in the GM Parts manual and mine didn't wear out, the seals blew. Either way, I have NEVER owned a vehicle that had this issue at 44,000 miles.

this is a strut. a shock does not have a spring perch.

Trust me, its a shock absorber. I'm aware the online parts stores call it a strut, but the service manual and official gm parts manual call it a shock absorber. The service manual calls the front a strut, and while I haven't had to go toe to toe over the warranty for it yet, my service guy said they may deny it if it also leaks because the GMPP warranty may class the cartridge as a shock absorber. Hopefully it hold out and doesn't become an issue.

Maybe it's a case of circumstance. Just cause yours went out at 44k doesn't mean that all z's will. Maybe it has to do with your driving style /manners, or maybe you just got unlucky.
Either way it's a wear and tear part , No matter if your car is a ZL1 or a 500,000 dollar Ferrari.... suspension is always going to be wear and tear and need replacement with mileage...

Definitely wouldn't call it an 'issue'

Is the cost $1k because it has the MRC fluid in it, or is this not the part that stores that fluid?

Price doesn't include shipping, but an online retailer has that part number at $742 for two.

I agree with others, although 44k seems premature, it all depends on driving style, roads etc. I've also seen people on here balk about tire prices, brake prices etc. One should know that a car with the sportiness and technology of the ZL1, things are going to be more expensive when it's time to replace them.

Good luck on the labor end of things and happy driving!

Agreed. every time I took my GTO in to get fix, it was a min of $1000 to fix. With the ZL1, $2000. You have to pay to play.
The struts needing to be replaced isn't that bad, just unexpected...I've had more supercharger replacements. The drive for the supercharger is $2000. Looking forward to eating that cost when the warranty is out.

With mag ride? I have always heard that mag ride was expensive to fix and I wish the ZL1 didn't have it for that reason. Pay to play and 425$ a strut/shock/whatever every 40k is not so bad... IMO a ZL1 shouldn't have 44k miles yet. I have never owned a car that did not have some repair required at 40k
