Question Loud Bang, Car Dead

2012 RS convertible, V6

As soon as I turned the key, there was a VERY loud bang, sounding like it came from the back.

No, there are no lights anywhere, the car won't start, and I can't remove the key from the switch, get out of Park, etc.

No, the steering wheel isn't cocked, locking the key...it's actually turning freely, so I don't think the key is in the Off position and I can't turn it there.

Was it a backfire? Did the battery explode? I can't open the trunk, of course, to check...nor get out the half gallon of milk which isn't going to last long.

The battery was fine, never any trouble with it...I had just driven to the store and it started with no problem. But when I came out of the store...BANG.

No weird smells, no smoke (not even accompanying the BANG), just dead dead dead.

Any idea what it is, and what I can do to fix it...after I take a two hour bus ride back to it?

Pull the back seat down and then you can get trunk open by pulling the release lever on trunk lid.

Open the trunk from the back seat (latch above rear seat) so you can retrieve your milk or whatever then use the glow in the dark emergency latch inside the trunk to open it

Sounds like some sort of battery problem. Through the back seat like these guys said. Be careful!

I love the fact that no one saw that he owns a convertible . Dude break out your manual and see how you can get in the trunk with out battery power . Or try and see if you can jump start the car from the remote terminals next to the engine .Or call Triple A and have the car towed to the dealer.

I guess I'll drive my wife's Dacia with the bad camshaft there and try to jump it.

I'm in Germany, so AAA isn't an option...ADAC is, though it's a pain in the butt to get them on a military base. No Chevy dealer here at all, though.

Still no idea what the BANG was.

For future reference: There's a keyhole hiding behind the edge of the rear drivers side seat that will open the trunk, unpowered.

So I opened the trunk.

Holy crap! The battery actually DID explode. Acid all over the place.

I hope it was just a random thing, and the new one I'll buy doesn't do the same as soon as I hook it up.

What would make a cell (just one, I think) burst like that?

Preventing Car Battery Explosions
There are two primary ignition sources that you have to worry about, and they can both be avoided with careful charging, jumping, and maintenance practices. The first ignition source is a spark created when connecting or disconnecting a jumper or charging cable. This is why it’s so important to connect to bare metal on the engine or frame instead of the battery. If you hook up the negative jumper cable to the battery itself, any lingering hydrogen may be ignited by the ensuing spark. This is also why it’s a good idea to wait to turn on or plugin, your charger until after it’s connected.

The other type of car battery explosion still involves hydrogen gas, but the ignition source is inside the battery. The issue is that if a battery isn’t properly maintained, and the electrolyte level is allowed to drop, the lead plates will be exposed to oxygen and may warp. This can lead to the plates flexing and touching during the extreme current drain initiated whenever you crank the starter motor, which can result in a spark inside the battery. That, in turn, can ignite any hydrogen present in the cell, causing the battery to explode.

Not a random thing. It's a too old battery thing.
