There's no such word in the way you are probably using it. Most people who make the mistake use it like this:

"Steve Dallas makes alot of smart@ss comments."

When it should be:

"Steve Dallas makes a lot of smart@ss comments."

But that said, "allot" is a completely different word with a completely different meaning, and it goes a lil' something like this:

"I'm going to allot $200 a month to go into my car mods fund."

I get what he's saying, he was scolded, told there is no such word as "allot". Well it IS a word as evidenced by the above responses and a look in the dictionary.
If he is on ebay saying "I got allot of stuff to sell" then he sounds less educated.

Lots of people think "a lot" is one word "alot" and it's a bit of a pet pieve for me....just like people who pronounce the "t" in "often".

I know it's wrong but still cram it together into one word. I'm pretty darn articulate and have a firm grasp of the English language and usage but that's the one "error" I do on purpose.

If the Simpsons can get the word "Meh" into the dictionary then I would sign a petition or something to make ALOT a/the word

you can tell he used it wrong because of the first post. someone questioned his use of the word "alot" or "allot". as in there is allot of confusion going on here.

you can not put "a" and "lot" together to mean "many".

Yes, Steve Dallas alluded to the world of Allot. And, in a thread focused mainly on grammar, I find it hard to believe that you could unknowingly butcher the English language so much in one sentance:
