True.. But that new metra kit just came out not long ago. I think the OP should have the old version.. Maybe he can tell us. It is weird that the metra kit controls arent working for him.

I think that the OP might have not connected the Steering wheel interface cable to the back of the radio. in the first post, he is wondering if there is a separate cable for it so I am guessing that he either missed it or does not have it line monchy said

Here is the answer I got from support:
Good afternoon.*The newest version of the 99-3010S will include a harness to plug into our ASWC-1, but, the unit no longer has steering wheel controls built in.* The original 99-3010S has the steering wheel controls built into the kit.

Yeah... I was really frustrated and disappointed. I was sure that I read up on this and expected full integration. :/

Reading the manual, I found out that I now need to purchase TWO additional items for the metra kit to retain all the OEM functions.

1: ASWC-1 for steering wheel control interface
2: XIA-LCD, their two line LCD display which allows access to the vehicle functions that were previously within the options of the OEM headunit.

The instructions are a bit unclear to me. As best I can tell, they have two options covered; if you have the amplified (boston acoustics) or non amplifed (stock) system in the car.

They seem to need a third option; the ability to use this kit to integrate into an aftermarket stereo that will be using external pre-amp outputs. I *thought* this was what I was getting with this kit and now I'm going to have to hack it, plus order two more parts.

*grumbling*

Has anyone posted information on how to make this work with an aftermarket radio (pre-amp out) going to aftermarket amp? Without keeping the factory amp, adding speakers and such as a band-aid because this kit isn't up to par.

sure would be nice if metra even mentioned this crap in the instructions or listed it when ordering.

I had to look online for a recent instruction sheet for the install.. even though my kit has a may 10 manufacture date.. the instructions that are included are way outdated..
really pretty sad..
but not many options out there..
there are also wires that never even get mentioned in the instructions.. left with a lucky guess as to where they go..

certainly will never recomend a metra kit to anyone.
oh yeah there web page is toast.. go figure..

if you don't want the steering wheel controls to work no it is not..

Finally got my steering wheel controls to work,, pretty simple, one of three ways to get the ASWC to recognize the controls..

1. Use the reset button on the ASWC unit then turn on the ignition (do not start the car).
if this does not work

2. turn on ignition (do not start the car) and hold the volume control in the up position for about 60 seconds.
if this does not work..

3. Turn on the ignition (again do not start the car) and repeatedly tap the volume up button over and over again and again. repeat for about 60 seconds..

if this doesn't work.. turn the friggin thing into a Frisbee... lol..

it took to the third option to get mine to recognize my system..
now if I can only get the dang Kenwood to recognize my car I will be in great shape...
