Should I Add a CAI

Hey Everyone,

I've had my 2020 camaro 2ss for a little while now and i've been thinking about getting the cold air intake. I have a couple of questions for those of you who have gone ahead and upgraded. Im specifically looking at the GM intake so I don't void my warranty.

1) Will I pass smog/emissions with this upgrade?
2)is this a costly upgrade if i have the dealership/service install it?
3) everything i've read has been pretty vague, how exactly does it enhance performance (what are the benefits over stock?

Thanks guys so much for your help,
Matt

Yes, you'll pass emissions.

General cost is around $350-400

I went with K&N Blackhawk. Simple install and sounds nice. Most people recommend roto-fab though. (I wish I had)

The general census is that GM stock filters were engineered well and that little to no performance is added from a CAI.

Edit: Also, you won't void your warranty no matter which brand you go with.

Matt, to me it would be a nice upgrade to the stock intake because it really looks good. It will not have an effect on emissions and is relatively easy to install yourself if you are mechanically inclined and have tools. After you install it you take the car to the dealer to get the tune flashed to the ECM for free with the paperwork that comes with the Chevy Performance CAI. With the intake the car will pickup maybe 2 to 5 hp and the intake sound will be louder when accelerating. If you plan future mods though you might consider a Roto Fab CAI because it works better with other performance parts.

1) Yes, this is a GM approved, CARB certified part, you'll get a CARB EO (executive order) sticker with it.

2) The part itself is expensive and as Greg says, you can install it yourself and cruise over to the dealership to get the official GM calibration flashed. You will receive a one-time use calibration code with the intake, and the product price includes the cost of flashing. I'm not entirely sure the physical installation would also be covered, my hunch is that it isn't.

3) I had both the GM intake and now the Roto-Fab, and to be honest, the GM intake is mostly an appearance mod, with only a small hp gain if any, and slightly increased intake noise. The big downside for you with the Roto-Fab is that while it flows more air and thus helps more with future mods, it is non-CARB compliant and thus technically not street legal in NY, plus of course if you tune the car, you lose the warranty.
The decision is obviously yours to make

No need for "hate mail", but it's his car and his money, if he wants to spend it on a cool looking intake, it's his business and who's anyone else to tell him off? There's no universal answer to what "waste of money" is.

The GM Performance CAI looks great, increases induction noise, and improves throttle response. I highly recommend it!

It looks cool and increases intake sound, but offers little to no performance increase. Modern cars - not just the Camaro - all have cold air intakes with as efficient of a naturally aspirated intake as possible from the factory. Where aftermarket CAIs shine is on really old cars that take in hot air from the engine bay. But starting in the late 80s, on cars where the intake tube connects to the fender liner, CAIs stopped being effective.

Yeah, that's what I did too. I don't see how a CAI works any better than the stock unit with a low restriction filter installed like the K&N.

And those open cover CAI getting air inflow within the engine compartment defeat the whole purpose of CAI.

Yeah that’s what I did was put in a Summit Racing brand filter in my ZL1 that was probably made by K&N. It sure looks like one and cost less than the K&N!

I agree, and getting the GMP CAI keeps your warranty intact without question... Whenever I pop the hood for someone that is the first thing they comment on...

The Chevy performance intake does look good and reminds me of my 2016SS Cold Air Inductions CAI I installed a year after I bought the SS. The Chevy Performance part is made by Cold Air Inductions anyway.

Just to repeat what people are saying. The stock intake is already a CAI. I still bought the GM intake because it looks great on a blue car
