Solid State Isolator ?

Hey guys I have only found 1 vendor selling this solid state isolator. Does anyone know other vendors selling them? Is there one that stands out more than the others?

I think everyone's selling the same isolator, so I'd go for the best price and choose a vendor who you plan on doing business with in the future. Are you referring to the solid coupler for the supercharger? LPE has been selling them for a while.

A lot of the ZL1s and CTSVs have a rattling noise that sounds like marbles in a can coming from the Eaton SC. The noise is caused by a spring on the OEM coupler that wears into the shaft of the SC. The noise is generally eliminated by using the solid coupler. It's a must when changing to a smaller upper pulley, since it costs less than $50, but would be a lot of work to change just to get rid of the noise.

All LSA engines use this same blower. The noise is from the (not very good designed) coupler/spring system and it makes noise that is annoying, and gets worth with miles.

Going with a solid coupler eliminates the noise, but there is no isolation between the drive pulley and the gearset so the life of the head unit is shortened by app 30% (direct from GM engineer).

There must be some shock dampening or all is transferred directly to the gears/rotors/shafts/bearings, and a solid coupler transfers all that shock but does eliminate the noise.

METCO Motorsports, LPE and I think KDi has an isolator also.

We've been installing the solid coupler/isolators for years now on the Eaton blowers. It is not just noise that you will experience when the isolator starts going, but you will see it show severe signs of wear. I have seen bad isolators on 1500 mile cars (as well as shaft wear), as I have seen them on higher mileage cars, and vice versa I've seen plenty of good ones still that we have changed because it is a must.

Here are some pictures of the wear on the shaft Shaft wear 1, Shaft wear 2.

----------------------------------------------------------

Here is a media drawing released from GM in late 2012 that actually identifies a solid coupler being used in the LSA motors.. Unfortunately that has not happened yet. There were talks that the new supercharger kit part number 19301022 includes a solid isolator. I can neither verify nor deny that, so take that with a grain of internet salt rumors!

----------------------------------------------------------

The very popular Eaton M62, M90, models that GM has used on various vehicles with the 3800 series motor (Grand Prix, etc.), 2.0L Ecotec Cobalt (M62 Eaton), does not have a torsional spring loaded coupler, as they have a solid one piece coupler.

Below is a picture of the Eaton solid coupler used in GM applications in the past.

Good Info Matt - and that's exactly why I'll be putting one on mine!

Yup, CTS-V owners have been doing the solid isolator mod for years now. I'll be doing it at some point.

okay, so do I replace the coupler and decrease my blower's life span by 30% (according to Tracy's post) or do I leave it alone and wait for the ticking timebomb to let go as in my blower taking a dump?

at least with the latter g.m will fix it under warranty. keep in mind my whole supercharger had to be replaced at about 10k miles. dealer said new s/c had different design so wouldn't happen again but im just starting to hear the noise on occasion creeping in. I know soon there will be another s/c needing warrantied so I have opted to wait on the coupler just in case. if that happens I may try a solid coupler.

These are the pics of the damage caused to mine after 9,400 miles

I'd replace it!

so lets say he replaces it and then finds out the 30% loss in s/c life is true. then what? you must remember the car has been out for a year so we really should know what kind of miles people have put on the solid isolators without issue. I believe I have one of the higher mileage '12's on this site so im real curious about longevity of the solid one. as we speak there is a shop working on a solid isolator for a chevy dealer that does not rattle the super charger to death.
