When will wireless carplay be avaliable?

It is very inconvenient to plug it in every time. When will wireless carplay be avaliable? Can it be done with a software update in the future? Or need hardwares are needed?

I think wireless carplay wad introduced in IOS 9 a while ago.

The consensus says wireless CarPlay will use a form of Wi-Fi. This article seems to suggest existing CarPlay capable systems will not support wireless CarPlay. So that means new hardware and no backwards compatibility.

^^^From my understanding we were not getting wireless...but I HOPE I am wrong.

The car has both wi-fi and bluetooth...that should be everything it needs to communicate with the iPhone once Apple finishes programming wireless Carplay. But only Apple knows for sure and they're not shy about making people pay extra to get new features.

My hope is that if it does use some kind of wi-fi connection or other connection that our cars don't have that they might offer something to plug into our USB ports to speak to our phones.

There's been no talk about exactly what kind of Wi-Fi they are going to use and it's definitely not going to use BT. But if you take a look at the Lightning Digital AV adapter, it's using Apple's own AirPlay hardware. That makes me wonder if they will force the OEMs to use the same hardware for wireless CarPlay. This would allow Apple to limit what it can connect (more $$ for them) since using standard Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi Direct would mean they have to allow it to connect to anything with the right software. Guess we will wait and see, but I don't see Apple changing their business model.

I don't think that there is any hardware change for 2017 MY.... Let's hope this can be solved by a software update.

How many times has Apple enabled a major piece of software for older hardware? How many times have they changed a connection type and render old hardware obsolete? For that matter how many times has an auto maker enabled major new software via an update?

Not impossible of course but based on Apple's business model and the OEM, I would say new hardware will be needed for wireless CarPlay.

Don't forget AA also isn't wireless and if both enabled wireless there will need to be an update to the infotainment system and GM is notorious for not providing updates. Just like 2014-2015 GM vehicles can't have CarPlay or AA even though they have the same mylink systems.

I agree, I won't use AA very often since I always use the wireless charging pad, rarely ever take out a USB cable. I primarily wanted it for Google Maps anyway, so the few times I need a Nav, I will plug it in.
