Did bushing job today. This is how the shifter should have felt. Thanks NH-SS.BTW I see the shifter is now selling for about $200.

I've had my bushings in now for about a month and it's great! Still nice and firm with minimal play! I must say though, the only drawback to this fix is a slightly increased vibration during hard acceleration.
I have the stock Hurst white ball on mine and the vibration seems to be amplified through the ball. I removed the ball and applied pipe thread tape to the threads and used a rubber washer under the ball between the nut. This seems to have reduced some of the vibration through the ball. Another fix for vibration is to lower the windows a little! lol! Seriously, when I noticed the higher level of vibration I had the windows closed (cold evening). As soon as I cracked the windows I could hardly hear the vibration with the wind noise in the cabin! It's like noise cancelling headphones, works like a champ! |

I'm installing my new bushings and have run into a problem-
OD was perfect! Couldn't be better, but I thought the ID looked pretty tight. Prepared to be patient, I started burnishing. Following directions very closely, I finally was able to pass the pin thru after 90 minutes. After several more passes in and out from each direction, I cleaned and attempted the dry slip-fit by hand, but it was still too tight. Repeated step #9, times about 12 now! The pin passes readily while on drill and with a little grease, but it only passes thru by hand with significant resistance. I'm trying to remain cautious not to over-burnish, but i don't seem to getting anywhere. I've let everything cool several times (I've actually been working on this over several days- but I'm needing the car back!). Would I do something terrible if I made a couple passes with some medium rubbing compound? I don't want to go thru intentionally wiggling the pin to open things up . Any advice? |

[QUOTE=NH-SS]Hi,..
Well,.. there are dimensional tolerances on all components. My bushings are +/- .0003 on all dimensions to ensure a propper fitment. If your OEM pin is oversize you would have the problem you are describing. I wouldnt suggest a compound as this will embed into the porouse bearing material and cuase problems in the future. I would repeat the burnish from both sides, when the pin does go through completely your done. When installing the shifter assembly lube the bushing and pin with liquad soap to ease in the assembly. Keep me posted Dave Thanks Dave- I just made another pass with grease and the pin will pass thru by hand with less resistance. Does it need to turn in place? It won't do that now, but if it just needs to pass thru, then maybe I'm closer than I thought. Thank you for the input and rapid response! I won't forget the soap! |

OK- got'er done and it is definitely worth the trouble, just don't think you're gonna cut a corner or "burnish in place" (well I was kind've thinking about it ).
I wouldn't wait for Hurst's fix- a "higher glass content" bushing is available now for free, just call their customer service line. But a heavy duty (metal) piece is 3-4 months out, and I'm sure it will not exceed the very exact machining and fit this fix offers. While I was blessed(?) with a slightly over-sized pin requiring alot of burnishing (no brag- just fact), the external dimensions of this thing were dead-on leaving zero play and no slop in the movement. It's also got a really cool "snick-snick" sound as you move from one gear to the next. Oh yeah- and it's surprisingly inexpensive! Get one while you can! |

The burnishing process is a real PITA for sure! Took me about 40 minutes to do both bushings before the pin would go in by hand! It was all worth it though!

The ID is VERY TIGHT. Took me HOURS to burnish it...but the outside is spot on.
