hurst shifter
Hi,
I am ordering a new SS and am considering Hurst linkage . If anyone has an informed opinion I would like to here it. Is it worth $380 over the stock shifter? What does it look like ? Thnx, JIM Last edited by daytripper; 05-25-2011 at 10:11 AM. Reason: spelling |

The factory Hurst shifter is a 22% reduction in throw over the stock shifter. The aftermarket Hurst shifter is a 40% reduction in throw. The shifter itself looks just like the stock one except that it has the Hurst logo on the sides of it. Check out my albums for images of it. If you are looking to get a short throw shifter I would save the $380 and buy an aftermarket one.
For me personally, the factory Hurst isn't short enough. I may be upgrading to the aftermarket Hurst in a little bit.

The after market Hurst is 44% shorter throw then the stock shifter. An after market Hurst cost is about $320.00. And is easy to install.

I have the factory Hurst shifter and love it. You can get a shorter throw shifter in the aftermarket but unless you plan on racing you probably don't need it, plus they can't void your warranty with the factory parts in place. I'm not saying this would happen but you are open to the possibility of the claim that aftermarket parts caused a failure.
Plus unless you are a DIY, the $380 for the factory install is probably on par or cheaper than an aftermarket installed by a shop, and it's got the GM warranty! |

The aftermarket also comes with both the flat stick upper and white ball for the old school look and the factory style upper for re-using your OEM knob.

It looks like this:
 I like the factory Hurst. It feels just right for my driving. The car I test drove before ordering had the stock shifter and it felt like rowing a boat to me. The aftermarket shifters I've driven (not in a 5th Gen) have felt like they took significantly more effort than stock. The factory Hurst feels like it splits the middle perfectly. If you intend to race, aftermarket is the way to go, plus you have several options on brand. I recommend finding one to test drive with and without the factory Hurst and then decide if it's worth the extra cost. Perhaps someone near you with an aftermarket might let you row through the gears (not necessarily driving) to get a feel for it as well... This is all a matter of opinion and feel for the driver. Who knows?? You may not like the feel of either over stock...

I'm with you splitting the difference seems like the perfect compromise.
