It has begun...twin turbo 2010 GT500

For the two or three folks on the board who might genuinely be interested, I have started the process of installing twin turos on my 2010 GT500.

If you will recall, I had previously owned a 10-second KenneBell 2007 GT500 which I took back to stock before trading it in on the 2010. It had been my original intention to simply transfer the KenneBell, coilovers and other goodies over to the new car.

Well, after much debate and realizing that I would have to make some significant modifications to the stuff I had to make it fit correctly on the 2010, I elected to instead sell the stuff I had taken off the 2007 and go a different route in my quest for better performance.

After consulting with several people with much more knowledge and considerably more experience than I have, I have elected to take the turbo plunge. Not only are turbos an efficient means of boosting power, they could also be installed without making any changes to the car at all. (i.e. no hood notching, no special k-members, no relocation of parts, etc.)

The system I have elected to go with is the Hellion "Hellraiser" system for the GT500. This as a compound boost setup that utilizes (in the kit I went with initially) twin 61mm Turbonetics turbos pushing air through the stock Eaton blower. This setup can be upgraded to two 68mm turbos down the road if I desire more power, but considering that this is my first foray in the world of exhaust driven boost, I figured going with the most basic setup will be more than capable of getting the car to the power levels I was looking for on pump gas and the factory powertrain.

Obviously, one of the factors in making this change was being able to do it with little or no out-of-pocket expense greater than what I was able to sell my other stuff for. I am pleased to say that the mission was accomplished with a little help from some friends and EBay.

I am hoping to make in the neighborhood of around 700-750rwhp on pump gas with this kit in place, but as long as it makes at least as much as I was making on 93 octane pump gas with the KB (~650rwhp), I will certainly be happy. The kit is scheduled to be shipped a week from Monday, and I hope to have everything installed and tuned by the end of October. If that is the case, I hope to get a few runs in with the new setup before Beech Bend closes for the season.

Here are some pics of the kit I have gone with installed on a 2008 GT500:

Thanks, I'll try to keep everything updated in this thread. However, while I cannot tell you which one at this point, I can tell you that the install will be covered by a magazine. Hopefully, it will chronicle the process with plenty of pics and some before/after dyno results.

As for next year, I'm always up for some fun at the track. Let's try to put something together after the holidays.

Nice! Looking forward to seeing the car when it's complete. What made you decide to go with the turbo instead of the KB?
I guess I should have reread your post before asking that.

Yeah, but there is not much doubt in my mind at all on how this will turn out. My driving skills leave a lot to be desired.

Nope, no rear end changes planned at this time. The 2010 came stock with 3.55's and I don't plan on running full slicks on the car, so if the stock unit will hold up as well as the one in my 2007 did, I should be fine with the stock axles/differential. I will likely do a one-piece driveshaft and some sort of UCA/LCA's, too.

An updated Hellion system. I bet that thing will be a rocket when you're done.

Can't wait to see the finished result.

Well, they system going on my car is the base system for the application. Until I get some seat time with the car, I figure that it will be more than enough to keep me happy. If it will run in the same neighborhood )mid-to-high 10's with me driving) as my KB's '07 did, then I will be a happy camper. Afterall, it is currently my daily driver.

However, I am sure that somewhere down the road I will elect to upgrade from the twin 61mm turbos to the optional 68mm turbos and possibly ditch the stock blower for a sheet-metal intake and up the boost.
