Whats the point of A.F.M?

Active Fuel Management (afm) drops the cylinder count from 8 to 4 when doing just everyday things, but this feature also takes away about 26hp and about 10 lb of torque. I understand that is ment to save you money on gas. However engines with this feature have a estimated mpg of 24 and the ones without it are estimated at 24 as well! So how does it help?

If automatics didn't have it, they would go into the gas guzzler tax range. That would hurt GM's CAFE, and your wallet.

It offsets the advantage of a manual transmission for FE. But the bigger advantage is it helps avoid the GG tax with the automatic in the Camaro.

The ones without it are manuals. It does help. You just have to do a lot of highway miles to take advantage of it. I had mine tuned out but recently put it back in, with a few tweaks. Mine is active in 6th gear ONLY and only above 65mph, I think. This way, I don't have to deal with it unless i'm cruising on the highway. After my trip to the fest, I can honestly say I couldn't tell if it was running or not. I did get 20.2mpg with LOTS of 85+mph cruising with 3.91's.

This statement is untrue. The 26hp/10ft*lb difference is due to the engines being different. Even without AFM the power difference is the same. The L99 (auto/AFM) has lower compression and a different camshaft than the LS3 (manual/no AFM) has.

I've been messing with it on my personal vehicle's. Tuned in correctly you can get 2-3mpg more on avarage BUT I see oil consumption problems when I have it tuned for that.

Taking it out, shutting off and getting a good tune you will average more mpg than having it on.

GM engineers do a real good job at tuning these vehicle's in but I do not understand why they leave so much on the table. I'm thinking they tune more for green house gasses.

I turn off the TC, and I have enough power for me!
Not planning on racing however... I just want a good looking car that has plenty of power and sounds like it.

I doubt it, since there's also a transmission difference.

The L99 car with any old driver will beat most LS3 cars down the track unless they've got some of the best drivers.

Want to know why it has lower compression and a different cam/vvt? AFM.
