gearing for turbo car

I'm looking at getting some opinions on these 2 gears. 3.25 vs 3.50.

car should weigh around 3400-3500 with me in it. has 8.50 cert cage, powerglide with brake. solid axle swap with a Ford 9 inch. car will make somewhere around 1500 on motor. looking to trap in the 160-170mph area

this is a street car but will realistically see 1-2k miles a year.

calculating in converter slip, 3.50's on a 29" tire might not even hit 160mph

Work the math and factor in 10-15% converter slip

damn! really that much converter slip? I was thinking 5-7%!!!

I'm looking at the et drags. they measure 29.9 tall and will grow helping pull gear out on the big end. in the street I'll run 28s and turn boost way down.

Starting with a converter loose enough to get a hard launch without a first gear, usually is like a 4500+rpm stall. Then pushing 1500hp to a converter that loose is seriously going to be 10-15% slip. I have heard that Pro Torque converters are the best a low slip with high stall but no first hand experience with them on higher powered cars. If they can keep it below 10%, that is amazing.

so I definitely need to stick with the 3.25s and a 30 tall.

You could always add a GV at the end of the powerglide if you need more gear

10-15% Slippage is way old school. We have Coan, PTC and ProTorque converters that have less than 5% at over 2500HP. THe PTC is the easiest to spool because of the Nissan based core. With the new technology in converters also comes the challenge of power management in the lock-up phase in the application of power. This usually occurs within .3-.7 seconds into the run. Playing with engine timing in this area of the run helps tremendously, although most on this forum wont be making the power to need this kind of tweeking.

I have always been a fan of less rear gear and more converter. Just seems to be a little more consistent. Also remember that a lower rear gear (numerically) will help lock the converter up a little tighter.

the shop is doing bigger wheel tubs so I should be able to fit a taller/ wider tire. I've been looking at the 32x14s. if I can manage to put those under it I'll be going with the 3.50s
