Tranny grenaded on Dyno

So what are all the 600+ rwhp cars doing to the 6L80's to hold the power?
Mine let go on the dyno yesterday after doing a 416 forged/stroked motor.
Looking to rebuild it now was wanting to know what evryone else is doing.

Until more development in hard parts and tunning become common place and proven, I use paddle shifter without full throttle shifts. I have over 10k miles with over 650 rwhp. I know I'm not able to take advantage of auto shift but still have lots of fun running through the gears. That is 4th-6th, the only ones where traction can be found. Dyno presented no problem for me yet. (Knock on wood)

Why not go ahead and do a built 4l80e and be done with it? Sorry to hear of your misfortune. I always try and be optimistic, so if something breaks its just a good excuse to get better parts.

Why is the 4l80 better than the 6? Can't you just put better parts in our autos and be set? Forgive my ignorance, just doing a little research for the future.

Circle D say that the stock tranny will start to strain when you get to 440 or above to the back wheels. They have rebuilds that will guarantee to hold 600 to the back wheels.

Not sure what let go they will be taking it apart today, as for the converter i am sure that was seated correct the car was on the street for a week before bringing it back for some final tuning and pulley swap that's when the tranny let go. Yours is still hanging in there, good for you says alot about Ted's tunning.

Yea i was planning on a tranny rebuild anyway just came sooner that i wanted. The 4l80e is one option need to do more research on it.

600 to the wheels is not enough i am closer to 700, i hear alot of the tranny guys say that the 6l80 will not hold for long after 600 to the wheels no matter what you do to it, wondering if that's true.

The folks in Houston have tried making the 6L80 work with all the current hard parts available but they kept having to go through them. These guys are Mad600 and DangerRuss. I guess a 376 15psi of FI and +200 nitrous are too much for the 6. Now they are running 427s. They got tired of paying for rebuilds and made the move to the 4L80. The 4L80 is a TH400 with overdrive. It takes the horspower with no problem. ARD's signiture car has one in it behind a 468 stroker and LOTS of nitrous. He drives it to work everyday and thrashes on it for the events. The 6L80 would never stand a chance behind it.

If you're building a 700rwhp+ your going to get frustrated with the 6L80's weak points. Circle D has done some great R and D work but the builds now are more demanding. The only disadvantage to the 4L80 conversion is knowing what else to change in the car to make it work. The 4L80's final drive ratio is slightly higher by about 10% on the cruising rpms compared to the 6th gear of the 6L80. The 4L80 will allow you to run a steeper rear gear ratio b/c of its 1st gear ratio of 2.48 verses the 4.08 1st or the 2.38 2nd of the A6. That also means the 4L80 has a narrower set of gear ratios more suited for competition.

Hate it for ya man,I REALLY feel your pain, mine is done as well, seems these 6L80's are pileing up.I've been studing and doing research, and have come to the conclusion that the 4l80 will be my tranny of choice, for me it's gonna tame my car down sum with the taller 1st gear,There's to many years of R&D on the 4spd to not go that route "IF" your making some big power or plan on it,Just sit it in the corner til they get it figured out
