I did that. I have the LS3 version of the SS1 cam - supposed to be easy to drive without a convertor. I am right on the edge of NEEDING a convertor and in all honesty should have one with this cam. I love the way it drives, but some people would hate how it pushes so hard through the brakes, the slight loss of lower end torque (but massive power up top), and how it bounces like crazy from the lope. It lopes very hard for an SS1. Here is the deal with that though. I swapped and run an LS3 behind a 6L80e, not an L99. The VVT cams were all built to run behind an automatic transmissions, where the LS3 cam is mainly used in manual cars, not always, but mainly. My SS1 LS3 cam has higher lift and duration than the VVT2 cam from GPI. Hell, I only have 10" of vacuum at idle max., which is why it's feels like it's pushing so hard. My LS3 SS1: .647/.638, (224/237, 112 +4) VVT-2: .637/.637 (223/235, 112 +4) I had no idea that the LS3 versions of the GPI cams were larger than the same stages of the VVT versions until I researched it, but it makes sense due to PTV on the L99. Now, the VVT-2 is recommended to have a convertor....But GPI says the LS3 SS1 don't need one. How does that make sense if you look at the specs and compare? I never really noticed that until after I got the cam. No big deal either way, as I am very happy with what I have, but I definitely need to get a convertor in there. Maybe my slightly raised compression (11:1) makes it a little rowdier, but I really doubt that as I have just a tiny .015 head mill. I know it's not the tune as Ryan from GPI spent a ton of time on the tune and did 7 revisions to get it perfect. It feels great. But I know it is not something many people would be comfortable driving daily.

Love the way that sounds! Congrats.
Is Atco back open? Last I saw they were trying to sell the property. It sucks as I grew up there and my dads car club was one of the main groups there in 1961 & 1962. |

God, I need 3.91s and a convertor so bad. Any pulls while rolling now and I need to make sure I am in the right gear first. I can only imagine how your ride is going to feel. You were talking about going with a supercharger down the line weren't you?

I did a supercharger too. The nice thing about the converter is when I step on it the converter flashes up and away I go. No need to worry about holding rpms or being in the right gear. The converter puts the engine right into the power band and the Trans tune takes care of the rest. It's a fun ride. I have a spot reserved at Atco on Thursday so hopefully I get a few passes and decent times out of it.

All sounds like fun to me. I dont mind the shake from a cam. My wife likes to bounce her leg in the car all the time so Im already living in a shaky car LOL. All in due time. Just need to get rid of debt and get the last three kids grown and out the door. So I guess when Im almost 60 Ill get to do everything I want ROFL.

Just remember, with great power comes the need for great tires!! LOL I'm FBO, 3.91, 3200 converter and on street tires from a dig, no traction (if I get on it hard). :(

Oh, this I know. I currently have Continental DWS06. They are good tires but I can break them loose without trying. Next time I plan to get a stickier tire like the Sport Contact. This is my 6th Camaro and I have driven V8s almost my entire life. My Dad loved muscle cars. Still to this day hates that he sold his Chevelle.

Even with drag radials I can break loose. Suspension mods do help a lot though. I put in solid cradle bushings, delrin control arm bushings, toe rods, trailing arms, and the ZL1 stabilizer bar. Mine hooks like a beast now.

You have a street beast my friend!!! I can't wait till next spring when I get my cam put in. Also I totally understand what you mean with changing the car. Even with just gears and converter it has given me a lot more respect for the gas peddle!!!

Agreed with you all, isn't nice to have a beast to drive on the street? This car is way more fun than my old school hot rods I had! And to still cruise around comfortably, can't beat it!! Many have tried to date. lol. Enjoy the ride!!
