I stumbled across this web page.

From there I came across a modification that some do to the lifter trays. Basically you drill holes into the trays to allow more oil to flow back to the oil pan faster rather than fill up before it overflows back to the oil pan.

Here's the book's explanation of why its done.

A good trick to improve the oil control in a hot-rod Gen III V-8 is to drill these 1/2-inch drain holes in the lower face of the lifter retainer trays above each lifter. On a production engine, having engine oil pooling here is acceptable, but on a high-rpm engine, having oil lying around only costs you power and causes the oil to foam and get hot.
The reason why I wanted to do it is to have more oil returning to the oil pan. A simple mod that can't hurt. The lifters will still have a pool of oil sitting on top of them at all times just as the factory designed. And more would drain back keeping more oil in the pan ready for circulation from the oil pump.

A look inside the tray so you can see where the hole is drilled.

What?

I'd consult with an engine builder. Never heard of anyone needing to do that to an LSx ever.

I used the meiling 365 after my cam swap. Stock volume and pressure. 40 psi at idle when cool or dry, over 30 psi when hot and humid.

Its not the only place I have seen this. And its for gen 3 and 4. The engine will have a smaller oil pan. It will be fine. So many have done it with zero problems.
