I agree. I like the car a lot but the body styling of the 1st gen is pure '60s while the wheels are pure 21st century. To me it breaks the aesthetic and muddles the looks. Slotted rallyes in maybe 18" would have been the way to go. It would also make the contrast with the slick updated interior and engine bay more stark.
if I had to come up with a negative, the rusty master cylinder also draws my attention. I used to get around that by painting them with engine paint, in light gray...OK one more, run some convoluted tubing for those ignition box wires

With the SMC it looks like it may have or is trying to look as if it came out of Barrys speed shop (as seen on tv) http://www.barrywhitesrrc.com/ not sure if he has SMC copyrighted or not.
