I lived in Jerzeyy for some time.. It's usually no problem if you get out and ask to pump yourself.

Hardly. One of the best things about living in NJ is not pumping your own gas when the wind is 20mph and the temp is 15F. Same when there is no wind and it is 98F. Same when it is nice weather and you want to go inside for a bottle of water or whatever and when you get back the car is ready to roll. Lots of upside.

So glad I live in Texas... that would get annoying.

This is up there with some of the more anal threads. Millions of people live in the state of NJ, thousands of them with cars nicer than the camaro that they care about too and don't feel inclined to make such ridiculous posts about a poor pump jockey trying to make an honest wage...

If you don't like it, don't come to my state... I'm just fine without you. Though to be truthfully honest, no one abides by the rule who doesn't want to. My father has pumped gas while directly infront of a marked State Trooper for the simple reason that the station was so crowded and the pump jockeys were hard at work with other customers...

So sad this one, but somehow still worth a good laugh...

I'm going to take you up on that.

Too bad, you struck me as sensible, but I'll chalk your refusal to come based on real downsides of NJ, not because we exercise a method of keeping our employment rate down...

You know what, I leave off any legitimate remark and just go with this.

I'm out.

I'm going to use 2012-1822's wise choice and not respond to that...

We aren't supposed to talk politics, I'll stay away from it. But the very idea of minimum wage and this concept that we should force people to support minimum wage jobs really doesn't do anyone any good. What the end result is, and this is fact, economically speaking is that the dollar of the minimum wage earner actually goes a lesser distance. In short, they are able to purchase fewer goods with the amount of time they work.

But if someone says they don't want me in their state, I'll stay away, I like it down here where it's warm better.
Oh my my, if ever you come to NJ again tell me! I will personally pump your gas for you so you don't have to worry about a citation (and trust me, I'm very careful). YOU are more than welcome here... I live in the northern part of the state which is nothing like "South Jersey" so if you haven't been up by me, trust me it's a totally different state with different politics.

I don't like the idea of minimum wage either, but that's something that's not changing anytime soon. No one is forcing a pump jockey to do what he does, but at least he had a job open to him and capitalized on it. Better that then on welfare IMHO. I happen to tip the pump jockeys I always go to, it goes a long way! Does it make up for their minimum wage? No, but it is a nice gesture that shows someone out their cares for them.

I apologize for the massively senseless comment I made to you earlier.

Just curious as last time I was in Jersey, I couldn't make it back to PA without stopping for gas. I was in my '72 beetle at the time (which took me 5yrs to fully restore) and the guy took the gas cap off (not attached) and set it, wet end down, directly on the fresh clear coat on the hood. I promptly instructed him to remove it, so he moved it to the top of the pump. He also was nowhere as careful as I'd have been about drips, etc. The whole situation irritated me, which is why I'm curious what would happen if I refused to let them touch my car. Are there laws governing this? Not planning on traveling any time soon, just curious.
A. In Jersey, yes. Be assertive. The attendant has to swipe the pump with his card, but you will be able to do the fill. Just get out ahead of time to be there and get ready before he comes and tell him your intentions. It's an old law from the 50's.

+1 So much better to sit in the car during winter.. leave the pumping to a pro. lol

BTW, NJ made this a law to increase jobs, and by my guess it's at least a 1000 or so people that aren't unemployed.
