Did my 1st Autocross Today! (actually 6/3/18)
I went into the event with the goal of trying not to embarrass myself, lol. I started out by taking a hot lap in a 4-door BMW 335 with an instructor behind the wheel and 4 passengers. This guy was an amazing driver to say the least. I couldn't believe how fast we were going for such a mundane car.
Then I hopped in my Z and let her rip. After 4 runs I was in 3rd place out of 17 and feeling pretty good. My 6th run was my best and put me into 1st place and I was happier then shit! Then some Porsche Cayman had to rain on my parade and beat me on the last run. Oh well. 2nd place for my first time is fine by me. An autocross is not really a place where a Z/28 will shine as most of you guys know. It needs to stretch its legs a bit. Here's a video of my best run: I posted this in the Z28 section, but most of the guys there don't do autocross, they do road racing. Currently looking for TW200 tires to put on it. The local guys have been a tremendous help to me. Probably going to get RE71's.

Autocross is fun. Pure intensity for 30seconds to 2 minutes. At the track you have some time to think (usually).

Autocross is perhaps the best introduction to the world of corner-carving. You get to learn how to drive your car really hard, in small bites at lower speeds. Most of which you can carry over to driving on the big tracks (any tendency to keep sawing away at the steering wheel in longer corners perhaps excepted).
Going from 1g or a bit better at 50 mph to 1+g at 110 mph is not as big of a leap as starting from the less than 0.3g at 50 that more closely describes most peoples' street driving. Norm

Congrats to you on a great first run! My first few experiences with autocross are the polar opposite from your post. I am going to give it a few more tries but am really thinking autocross is just not for me. |
