LMAO... I bet... How many times will Joe stop on the way home from picking it up... I bet that five hour drive takes ten or more...

I think I would just set that on the table on the garage, crack open a beer, and just stare at it. That's almost too sweet to tuck away and never be seen.

Here is a bit of the trouble we ran into with cobbling together pieces from different areas...

Someone pointed out the other day in another thread that when we buy high end parts, it ought to fit and work perfectly the first time... I beg to differ, in that yes there is some truth in that... When you buy one off high end parts, there will be some items to overcome.. The manufacturer cannot possibly test and engineer for every possibility that could arise... so you adapt and figure it out.... This is one of the aspects I love about my job... lots of thinking and fabricating on the fly... and one of the big reasons I know I chose the right builder for Brandi...

The pilot shaft on the new trans is right at .750 inches, the factory one is just over 1/2 inch...

We were told to get a pilot bearing from a Dodge Viper... Great... wait... the viper bearing OD is almost 2 inches... the Crank output snout is 1.705 inches... Hmmmm, ok, over to the lathe... We machined the outer race OD down to 1.705 inches and it fit like a dream...

The second problem is that the clutch alignment tool is for the factory ID pilot bearing... not the jumbo sized one we are now using... Not a problem... off to the parts house... and another one, and another one, and another one... etc...The last one I walked in, I told them I was looking for... and the guy said I was still looking for one... lol..

Not a problem...back to the lathe... We chucked up some aluminum stock and cut the OD down to .747 inches, and then drilled the ID to fit the new alignment tool, and while the piece was still warm, slipped it over the end of the tool and it is a perfect fit... We test fitted it to make sure when we actually used it we didn't slide it off and leave it in the pilot hole...That would have been a pain...

I don't have a picture of just the new pilot bearing installed, but there is one of them with the new flywheel. There are also a few pics of the machine work and the end result of the new pilot alignment tool...

We got the clutch installed, and called it a day since Corey had to pick up a young'un, and I needed to head back to the house as well..

So, the clutch is installed, the tool worked beautifully...

Stacking the clutch and intermediate discs was an adventure... I've never worked on a clutch that took so many hands to handle. Corey and I installed the clutches and pressure plate...and we needed two more hands though there wasn't room for any more...

Here are a few pictures of it installed...

Cool. Installing multi-disc clutches can be a pain in the butt sometimes. You get it all in with the tool and then for some reason, the tranny is slightly off and it is a cram to get it in without messing up the pilot bearing/bushing.

Looks like you have it aligned well. Sometimes a quick silicone spray on the tranny input shaft makes it slide together a lot easier.

Agreed, we actually put a bit of antiseize lubricant on the input shaft splines and prefit all three splined discs to make sure they would slide on the shaft freely...

This was as per the instructions from the manufacturer... We also cleaned off the excess so it doesn't fling off into the disc space creating slippage...

AMEN! I bet that along with an upgraded ZL1 Tremec would end my stock SS trans problems! At this point, I miss my M22 Muncie and McLeod clutch assembly! That was a bullet proof setup back in the day. PS - Robert you better start eating your Wheaties again and do leg crunches.

The above clutch along with this trans should end my problems, and your as well should you decide to bite the big bullet...

This afternoon, we got the bell housing installed as well....

It's bright...

Tomorrow morning, I'll notch out the tunnel for the new shifter pivot location... We'll then stab the transmission and get the pinion angle back to what it was prior to removing the factory cross member... From there, we will determine if we can modify the factory cross member or if we have to build a new one from scratch...

Thanks D.

We all have our strengths and weaknesses... or things we haven't been exposed to yet... I still couldn't figure out how to pull the body pieces or do the special installs you and Mike do... I watched you guys and missed too much...

Maybe someday...
