Question Anyone ever found chunks of steel like this in oil pan?

I had the oil changed my car today and had large chunks of steel in the oil pan.
I found some small flakes in the oil afterwards so I’m assuming a new engine is in my future, but despite the flakes and chunks that were found as far as anyone else could tell the car is running perfect. No knocking, low oil pressure or any other indicators. Just wondering if anyone would be able to give me a guess on what it could be?

Valve stem seals maybe? Have you installed valve springs?

Pull valve covers and ck springs and seals...

Looks like it could be pieces of a rocker trunnion retainer. if you still have the factory rockers that is.

Heck yea, that could be it also. I don't think he found needles but if he did, that would also lead to the valve train. Looks like pulling the valve covers is the right thing to do either way...

hard to tell but definitely not good.. I would do what other suggested, pull the valve covers and throughly inspect. If it was a rocker, Im surprised there wasn't any bearings

Agree - that big piece in the top right looks like a turnion cap to me. If you didn't find a bunch of needles that's pretty strange, but maybe they got washed out when you dumped the oil and didn't notice, and only the big stuff survived.

Definitely pull the covers before you run it. And let us know what you find!

Definitely looks like a trunion issue. Pull the valve covers and check your rockers asap.

I got around to pulling the valve covers off last night and everything looked mint still. All the retainers were still in place and nothing looked worn. Any other ideas? I had the oil filter cut open as well and there weren’t many flakes in the filter. Also, would the flakes in the oil be more of a brass colour if it was a bearing? I’m guessing I’m just catching the beginning of what ever is failing. At this point I’m debating just rebuilding the engine and putting forged rods and pistons in it.

It could be a lifter... you might be able to take the rockers off and remove the pushrods and look at them with a inspection camera ( can rent one from most parts stores), if not you'll have to pull the intake and valley cover and look at them..
