How to deal with ice on the car

My car got caught out in winter storm PAX and ended up covered in ice. 3/4 to an inch in some places. I was worried about it melting and breaking away and sliding of the roof and hood so I broke it up as gently as I could and lifted it off the car. I did not use a scraper. Some still slid and scratched the paint and I'm dealing with it over the next few day.

Did I do the right thing, or should I have just let it melt?

I always let it melt. When it melts it develops a layer of water between the ice and paint which the ice floats on and does not touch the paint as it slides across the surface. I have never had ice scratch my cars, and mine always sits outside.

word, I will occasionally lift some from around the stripes on the rear but usually let the sun do the work for me. sometimes I just sweep snow off it with a soft brush when need be, litely scrape the windows so the sun can get in and let it do its work, usually by mid afternoon it is clear with no issues.

If I didn't have a garage, that's exactly what I would do. Since I have a garage, I never have to deal with this.

OK, lesson learned. I never thought about the water layer. Heck, I never thought I would have to deal with an ice storm like we just had. Normaly, the car is garaged, but I made a bad decision and took the car out of town when I shouldn't have. Hopefully I won't have to deal with a situation like this again. Thanks to all that replied.
