Engine Cleaning

All,

I live in a dusty climate (AZ) and was looking for suggestions on cleaning the engine. Back in the old day I would spray the engine with Gunk and take it to a "do it yourself" wash to rinse the engine but not sure if this is still acceptable.

If your car is stock under the hood, typically on new cars you’d be okay to get it wet but I know many people are still weary of doing that, so you can get a degreaser to get most of the gunk off of its really dirty, brushes help to get in the smaller areas. Then you can use some trim shine (or interior detailer if you’re in a pinch) to clean all the blacks and a normal quick detailer for everything else

Missile Man Here is what I do. While the engine is cold I spray the entire engine down, then I use soapy water and a sponge, after cleaning I rinse it down. I dry it off as much as I can with a shammy and let the rest air dry. Make sure it is totally dry before starting it or you will through black water from the fly wheel and belts everywhere. Hope that helps.

Never do it with the engine cold. At least have the engine warm which will make the degreaser work better. However, if it's just dirt and dust, a simple rinse down may be enough. Then, drive it around a little bit to evaporate the rest of the water from all the nooks and crannies in the engine compartment.

I do not use any type of degreaser. As some of them damage the paint, etc. I just use soap and water, then use an air line to blow any water left after drying.

I use Purple Power. Spray it on and let it sit for about 20 to 30 minutes and then spray it off.

I saw this on one of the car tv shows lately. Haven't used it so can't recommend, but it might be worth looking at.

McKees37 makes great products, but that is probably expensive for what you get.

Here's what I do for my customers:
vacuum engine bay
clean with Meguiar's All Purpose cleaner and black microfiber towel
wipe the rubber with Duragloss 265 Ultimate Detail Spray
condition the plastic parts and trim with Mothers Back to Black

It is fine to spray a garden hose (no pressure) on any car engine made later than 1995. I use a hose if the engine is really bad.

Personally I avoid using a hose in the engine bay. You shouldn't need it if you're just dealing with dust. Waterless wash, some MF towels, and finish off with Adams In & Out and Chemical Guys VRT.

Here's a thread on it, including my before/after pics:

After almost 10 years my engine bay still looks like new. I only clean what can be seen. I use Simple Green on the W/hsgs, shock towers, cowl vent, air cleaner, fuse box, radiator tie bar and inner fender components. I use a small soft paint brush and then a light spray rinse gets it clean.

I'll betcha that chassis needs some attention. If you're gonna have it look like new, might as well have it look like new underneath too.

Like I said, I clean and detail what can be seen. It's a driver.
