Huffers Synergy Green 436ci/4L80e F1R SS Camaro

So I figured it was about time that I start my own build thread to document the build of my car. I am a 42 year old reformed drag racer who grew up on old school Chevy motors and classic muscle. I owned a bunch of 1st gen Camaros and a few 2nd gen camaros back in the day but had moved away from muscle cars into Harley Davidsons and other toys.

When the 5th Gen came out...a friend of mine bought one and fell in love with his....he raved about the power and handling etc so I ended up saying What the Heck and bought one with the intention of keeping it as a weekend toy/cruiser that I could wash and wax it and play around with it.

I should know myself better by now.....because speed is in my blood and I even tore down my Harley with 110 miles on it and bored it, stroked it and put ported heads on it. Just can't get away from it I guess.

The posts below will catch up to where the car is today.....that was Phase I.....Phase II is going to take it to an entirely different level I hope...at least that is the plan.

I started my journey with a couple of the most common mods there is.....Long Tubes and a cold air kit.....I went with Kooks 1 7/8 because they were high quality and Made in the USA which I liked....as well as the Borla Stinger catback and a RotoFab intake. The Kooks/Borla combo sounds absolutely sexy to me.....deep and a nice rumble without a blatty sound like so many of the systems seem to produce.

First trip to the track produced a best of 12.98 after the Longtubes and the cold air and a Janetty mail order tune.....with an M6 and a 2.0 60' time I was pleased and pissed at the same time. So I started making some calls and ended up at the doorstep of Vengeance Racing.

Here is what happened there. I started with a basic Whipple setup.....nothing elaborate and wanted to keep the cost down. Well....I hate doing things halfway so I ended up putting a LPE twin fuel pump setup into it, an RPS/Hendrix Twin Carbon clutch setup, Pedders rear suspension upgrades, a Snow Performance Meth Kit and a few other doo dads.

These pictures will document some of the work done as everyone likes staring at build thread porn.

I went with a Comp Cam Stage II Blower Cam that Vengeance spec'd out. It has great drivability and street manners and pulls hard right to the rev limiter...which we left stock for now as it is still a cast piston engine at this point.

TEA Dual Gold Valvesprings are being swapped

One head completed

Hendrix Street Slayer Twin Carbon Clutch Going in...This clutch is amazing!!

I have to say I totally dig the way the Whipple looks, feels etc. This is an INCREDIBLE choice for a street car....gobs of bottom end torque and an instant smile when you can be rolling down the road in 3rd gear and BLAZE the tires!! I really am 42 but I guess still a kid at heart because that makes me laugh out loud.

Tank is dropped and ready for the LPE twin in tanks

Charlie is buttoning up the connections for the whipple

Pfadt Stage III Suspension laid out ready for install! I debated back and forth on just going with lowering springs to save money and I ended up taking the cheap way out. Mistake.....A future post will show the drag specific coilovers that I have since installed.

Cradle dropped and suspension going on. One of the best mods you can do to a 5th Gen is a set of solid bushings from Pfadt. They tighten up the car nicely and even if you didn't feel how loose it was before, you will realize it afterwards. The springs an sways are AWESOME. Although I ended up changing the rear sway out for a Pfadt Drag Bar...that again is a future post.

Cradle back in and looking sharp

Charlie mounting the Snow Performance Meth Kit

On the dyno getting ready to make 670rwhp on a conservative tune! 65 This number was with the stock differential. We dyno'd again after the 9" and lost a few horsepower but nothing like what you might have read. When you take into account different conditions...I'd say around 10hp at most.

The 9" conversion arrived from Hendrix Engineering

Side by Side Comparison of a Stock 3rd member vs. the Strange 9 inch

Stock 2 piece driveshaft vs our new one piece from the Drive Shaft Shop

9 inch set up in place

Yeah I wished I had started on it from the beginning...I have a LOT of catching up to do.

Phase I was on the stock longblock.....Ron wrestled my wallet away from me and we are starting the build for a 427 RHS block and a 4L80e transmission.....and I am considering a Procharger F1R to replace the Whipple. I love the Whipple for a street car but they seem to max out around 800 to 825 hp.....everyone goes nitrous from that point on but I don't really want to do that.

So BIG motor....BIG blower.....BIG power and hopefully a LOW 9 second time slip in Florida in March.

So......after all that work by Charlie and the Vengeance gang......it's ALIVE!

I am not much for "bling" so this is about as far as I will get but I wanted to snazz up the engine compartment a little bit. The carbon intake tube and shaft cover are available from Whipple although they do a poor job of advertising them. I couldn't find a part number anywhere but Kevin at Vengeance called them to find out.

The valve covers are obviously a Vengeance item and the coil relocation was done by them. Cleans up the engine bay nicely.

Autometer Carbon Gauges in the ****pit. I prefer simple and am a fan of less is more...so these gauges are kind of old school....they don't read your ECM, they don't log anything, they don't blink or make noise...they just read the boost and the fuel pressure.

Simple....just the way I like it.

A few completed pictures to show the stance of the car...it looks really sweet....very fast just standing still and once you get used to the lowered look, a normal SS looks like a 4x4 truck it sits up so high.

The Pfadt sway bars and springs are a HUGE improvement to the way this thing handles......THIS is how it should come right from GM. The car handles like a turd stock.....but with a simple Stage III Pfadt kit...it's a completely different car.

Me too. 1st pass through we ran a 3.875" pulley but this was way low.....the Whipple chart does not take into account the longtubes and camshaft that we installed. The 3.875 only produced about 6 to 7 psi of boost instead of the 10 we were expecting.

We dropped it down to a 3.5" pulley and it's just a touch over 10psi.....probably 11 psi at max rpm.

Ditto for me...great group of people on this forum, particularly in the FI section.....we're like our own little island of misfit toys to steal a phrase.

I am trying to document everything I've done but I may be confusing everyone with the title....that's where it's going....ordered the RHS block today.
