Interestingly, if you look through the Performance Supplement Manual, it is recommended that the front plate is removed for track events on a ZL1. Didn't mention it for the SS 1LE, and I did a lapping day with the OEM front plate on just fine. I might remove it in the future just to be safe, though.

For the 19+, the OEM bracket won't need any drilling for the SS and ZL1, but the LT ones need holes in the bumper for attachment.

Front plates are required here in WI as well. I'm not running one. Any vehicle that I have purchased that doesn't already have the front bracket installed... doesn't get a front plate . Needless to say, while car shopping, I do sort of "filter out" vehicles that are mutilated with the front plate.

My guess would be air flow for the intercooler on the ZL1

It's probably for radiator cooling as well. More power equates to more heat, and ZL1 certainly generates lots of it.
