GForce driveshaft question

Anyone that has a @GFORCE1320 driveshaft, can you tell me if your u-joint yokes are out of phase?

I bought a used driveshaft that was supposedly rebalanced but it vibrates horribly. After some research, it looks like it may have been assembled incorrectly when they replaced the boot over the slider.

Pinion angle seems to measure ok using the Tremec app and I still need to check for runout, but I have a feeling it just needs to go to a local driveshaft shop.

So I'm just going to take it to a local driveshaft shop Monday but I thought I'd share what I'm dealing with in case anyone else has this issue.

I bought the driveshaft used, it had the boot replaced and had been rebalanced. I saw the reference marks they used and never even thought to check if the ends line up.

If you look at the first picture, you can see that the u-joint yokes are not aligned with each other (out of phase). In the second picture, you can see how far off the reference lines are when the yokes are aligned.

Not sure if this helps much but....GM intentionally off-clocked the yokes on old school driveshafts to improve NVH.

This is a good question to ask your driveshaft shop.

So the local place I dropped it off at said they always align the yokes. I was able to call GForce and they said they experimented with out of phase to match GM back in the 90's but not for mine.

Sometimes used parts are a real find (like my Whipple) and sometimes not so much.

What was the outcome? I’m fighting a similar issue and I’m curious what you discovered?

The shop I took it to checked the balance after I put the yokes in phase and told me it was fine, didn't even charge me for checking it. While I was at it, I replaced the front driveshaft adapter because the previous owner had damaged some threads and I wanted to eliminate any potential issues. I also rechecked the pinion angle with the exhaust out of the way and it was spot on.

I'm not hearing or feeling the driveshaft vibration I was before, but my motor, trans, and cradle mounts pass so much noise to the cabin that I can't tell if it's perfect.

Overall, I'm pleased with it, but I probably would have been better off just buying a new one.

Intentional out of phase shafts are made that way almost always because of compound angles. That is, where say the trans and diff not only have a upward or downward angle, there is a side to side offset as well. Not much of either of those exist in our Camaros that I'm aware of.

Our company produced the OE Polaris drivelines and purposely built them out of phase because of crazy offset angles. Polaris' engineers came up with this configuration.

I can say this, almost without exception, when those shafts ended up at a driveline shop for repair, those shops put them back in phase and cured some tortional vibrations. Class 8 Volvo trucks used to have a design where the drivelines were out of phase but it's pretty rare and given the 'non uniform motion' of a standard u-joint, keeping them in phase is generally best - provided the trans and diff angles are near parallel.

I have DSS drive shaft I bought used, took to a shop to get it balanced, however they said would it would be hard due the design. It has slight vibration over 75mph, and I dont like it. What's weird is the shifter and trany feels smooth but you still feel it un your butt. Below 60mph it's fine. I've heard that 1 piece DDS shafts suck above 120mph and yes they do.

How fast have gone in the Camaro above 120??

I have the DSS 1 pc for the last year or so and have been 140 with no issues, and several 7500 rpm pulls on the dyno.. Also when I'm doing WOT pulls the trans shifts at 7200..
