Looks like the update totally fixed everything. Even a lot louder when connected.

iOS 4.2 Software Update

This update contains improvements, including the following:
• Bug fixes, including:
- Eliminates sound artifacts occasionally captured in
recorded audio with 4th generation iPod touch
- Improves audio playback to car stereos via USB

Hopefully this fixes the static issue when skipping songs!

Well damn. I guess I have to wait until 4.2 is jailbroken. Be nice to find out if this finally gets rid of that static sound I get when I first plug my iphone in. Hope it works.

happy to report that iOS 4.2 stops the static/popping sound that I had on iOS 4.1 on my 3GS
