Here is a good tip for those that do have a filter magnet. After your filter is installed, put the magnet on and have all the way counter-clock wise on the filter so it is butted up against the side of the oil pan when looking at it from underneath. If your oil filter were ever to start to come loose and start to spin off, (counter-clock wise) the filter magnet would prevent it from turning because it is already against the oil pan!

You can reset the oil life monitor yourself by pushing and holding the "set" button I believe. You do not have to bring it into the dealer to do this.
The manual says to turn the key to the on position -- don't start it though-- and press down 3 x on the gas. It will read 100% when you start it. I've done it 3x already so I know it works

I hadnt noticed the pix for the v6 before thanks.
Ive never seen this type to filter before.
I assume, I have a drain underneath and for the filter its just a replacement "drop in".

Any "tips" i should know about changing the oil on the v6? Or its just as simple as drain, refill, replace filter, close it up?

Ok I cant get the stock AC delco filter off, I bought the filter cap tool "A" from auto zone, 74-76mm, but the damn thing wont stay tight against the filter, it just keeps turning.

Any suggestions?

Saturday I made the ramps. And yesterday I changed the oil and wow it was an experience. It was my 1st time doing this on any car I've owned and it was well worth it. The hardest part of all was driving onto the ramps, that was probably the scariest voluntary thing I've done. I swear I got out the car and inspected my progress at each step on the ramp. Once the car was up I blocked off the rear wheels with these yellow curb-stops I have. Under the car with those ramps is pretty tight for me and I get slightly claustrophobic so the whole time I was scared the car was going to collapse and crush me lol... I took off the drain bolt and like an idiot thinking the oil would pour straight down.... it squirts out in a stream sideways (duh) so a little mess... I didnt poke a hole in the filter because Im a noob and thought Id mess something up but i think i let the oil drain long enough to not make a huge mess. Put the plug back in slightly hand tight with the ratchet, lubed up the new filter and put it back on, put all 8 precious quarts of Mobile 1 in, slowly rolled the car down in neut with the engine off. Let the car sit for about 5 min then checked the level and everything was good. Closed up, reset the oil life monitor and was ready to roll. It took me about 2 hours most of which was spent being a chicken and draining the oil, but I think next time it should take about 30-45min. Thank you for posting this up my dealership wants $140 and the lube place I used to go wants $85 (about $20 more than the cost of the oil and filter). Taking care of your own machine and saving money never felt so good.

Thanks.

My stock filter was on waaaaayyy past too tight. The filter cap tool wont work because the stock filter is not the same size as the recommended replacement. Either use a strap wrench or stab a screw driver through the filer and turn it that way. (mine was difficult even with that method.)

Also, quite a bit of oil came out at the filter end due to being up on ramps so if you are changing them make sure you have a drain under there.

Good write up. This made my first oil change nice and easy for me =) But it appears im going to have to drain out some oil. Putting in 8 Quarts was too much for my Camaro SS for some reason

Yup, I sure do. It is the parking garage attached to my apt. complex, so it is the only place I can do it for the time being.

Thanks for the detailed DIY! I realize an oil change isn't a big deal, but haven't been under a car since I assisted my Dad on repairs to my '78 Impala back in the early 2000s, and I've never done this on my own, so it's very reassuring to have the detailed step-by-step. Can't wait to get under there and get it done!
