I believe I am screwed...

So I changed the differential fluid the other day & took the car out for an easy drive. Drove slow & easy to listen to the rear end. As I was putting the car back in the garage I heard a rattle... I thought it was coming from under the car.

I put it up on ramps & crawled under to listen. It sounds like gravel rolling around at the back of the engine. I have ran through a list of what I am thinking it could be... Flywheel, Converter crapped out & catalyst knocking around in the can, and of course the dreaded lifter crap out...

I wish I was more familiar with the site. I have a video of the it & would upload it if I knew how. It is an MP4 file.

At first I thought it was a spun rod bearing... But it is not squealing at all. And it sounds like it is at the rear of the engine. The sound almost sounds like it is coming from the cat so I guess it could be a crapped out cat. However, lifters also resonate through the exhaust... SO, I am dreading the results. Gonna start by pulling the cat off tomorrow. It is on the driver's side & that is the easiest (And most hopeful) place to start.

I swear it sounds JUST LIKE gravel between the engine & 6 speed trans... Anyway, any advice is appreciated as always.

Anyone know what I should expect price wise if it is a lifter dead?? I know I will need a cam if it is a lifter & may as well replace it being that deep in...

Is there any way to get a look at the flywheel w/o pulling the trans???

I don't see that happening from a fluid change.

Or could be the transmission. Why only drive "slow & easy" on a fluid change in the diff.

You can upload it to Youtube and then post the link here. It will auto embed the video into your post.

I didn't think it was a result of the fluid change... LOL. I was explaining I was driving slow after the fluid change to hear the rear diff.

So I could hear the rear diff... That was the only reason I was driving it after...

It may help to isolate when the noise is happening.
Moving or not
In neutral or gear
Clutch in or out
...etc.

Different situations point to different parts.
Also, I have used a cheap borscope thru the vent hole and slave cylinder hole to inspect the clutch system with success.

Moving or not - Both
In neutral or gear - Both
Clutch in or out - Both
...etc.

I have noticed it at all times. Nothing stops it from happening. Like pushing in the clutch, in/out of gear, moving or not... However, when the car is 1st started the noise is either not present, or VERY light & cannot be heard over exhaust (Which is pretty much stock other Flow Master mufflers).

Thanks for the boroscope vent hole/slave cylinder idea.

** Gonna pull valve cover today just to make sure it is not a rocker arm. It really does not sound to be coming from that high up, but I need to check. If I can get a hold of a boroscope today I will try to get a look at the flywheel as well.

Thanks for the input.

Thanks to those who have offered legit advice, knowledge, & input.

OK, so I think I found my "Knock"

Driver's side top cat is apparently broken... Explains it sounding like gravel & no squealing... Will be taking it apart tomorrow & getting the old catalyst material out. Once I have the bad stuff out I will put it back on & run it to make sure that is indeed my source.

I will not replace the cat because I am going to headers w/o cats in the next wk or so... I will update the thread once I get it running again!!

Thanks to everyone who offered legit input.
