rear axle splines SS vs ZL1

I have been working on replacing my rear hubs and bearings on my 13 SS with DSS axles. The new hub will only slide on the splines about an inch or less before binding. I cleaned the splines and greased them with no improvement. The current hub slides on and off but the new one does not go on far enough to even start the nut.

Axle websites state the SS and ZL1 axles are not interchangeable at the hub even though both are 33 spline.

Question, does anyone have detail on the differences between SS and ZL1 at the hub? Is it the splines or is it something else like bearings etc?

What detail are you looking for. I have ZL1 hubs front and rear on my turbo car and in the rear on the vert. I have run SS and ZL1 axles with those hubs and run 1LE axles on the vert. The ends of the ZL1 and 1LE axles are similar in there is a taper from the shaft to the threads. The SS axles have no taper. different threads and use a different nut.

I thought the hubs were all 32 spline not that it matters as long as it's all Gen5.

Try a little grease in the splines or pull the axle and make sure the hub can seat in the knuckle properly.

Edit: I recounted the spines on an axle I had out today and the count is in fact 33.

I have interference prior to the hub entering the knuckle if I am pulling the axle outboard through the knuckle. G force site states that ss and zl1 are both 33 spline but not iterchangeable at the hub. Not sure why unless it is spline pitch.

Both new and current hubs measure same in the areas of the splines but the new one will only go on the spline about an inch prior to binding. Not sure if I have damaged axle splines and the current hub is worn to it, or have the incorrect hubs but have verified on gm parts site.

I cannot get the nut started to try pulling it on and the current hub slips right back into place.

Was looking for feedback from anyone who has ran across this interference.

Thanks

Sounds like you have the ZL1 or 1LE axles and you are using the SS hubs. I think you will need the ZL1 or 1LE hubs to match.

The ZL1 and 1LE axles have larger outer CVs and you can't bolt the hub in place with the axle in, so I always disconnect the UCA, toe rod, and trailing arm, put the hub in the knuckle and then put the axle in. It sounds like you are trying to put the hub in the knuckle over the axle and I've never had luck with that. The last guy with that problem had ordered the wrong axle, but that is not your case. The axle end should slide into the hub and if it goes in a bit but not far enough, I would look at the splines in the hub and axle for damage. I know the hub is new, but things happen.
