Thinking of Painting my Camaro.
Thoughts on painting my Camaro.
Ok I am getting a Rally Yellow 2SS. I do not want the stick on strips at all, friend of mine had them on his IROC and the started coming off after a couple of years. So we have a really good body shop in town that does alot of great paint jobs. So I am thinking of letting paint on the black rally stripes. Now here is where I want you thoughts. I was thinking of maybe doing these two other things. 1. Remember how the 1st Gen had a black stripe going around the nose. Thinking of doing that. 2. Where the fake slits are in front of the rear wheels actually having them painted in black to make them look real. Tell me what you guys think of my ideas. Thanks Scott |

The nose stripe could be done, but the nose of the 5th is more pointed in the center compared to the 1st gen. Not sure how it would look. Personally I would not paint the slits.

I thought of painting my own stripes. I got the white rally stripes. It would be easy to paint and cheaper than vinyl if you do it yourself. I think a little pearl in the white would look much better too.

2) I wouldn't paint the mail slot unless it's needed for the rally stripes or the stripe wrapping the nose. |

I would have to agree with draco on the nose stripe. Lets wait for someone to do a photo shop of this first.
The gills won't look good painted I don't think. |

There's already a photoshopped picture of the bumblebee stripe. Makes it look like a weird mustache, in my opinion.
Might be able to get away with the '69 bumblebee stripe, though. All in all, I think the nose of the 5th gen is too tall for a stripe to wrap around the whole thing.

Personally I would like an above view of the stripe on the '10. It's too hard to tell from the front. And for it to look decent on the side it would have to come all the way down imo.

I think the nose stripe wouldn't look right because of the more pointed nose of the 5th gen.
I also don't think painting the gills would give you the effect you want. I think it will draw more attention to them without making them look any more realistic. |

I'd like to offer some thoughts for you to consider. Having worked in a bodyshop for a number of years, I have as much insight as a person could have who doesn't actually paint cars professionally.
Be careful whom you choose for your work. Know that the more paint you build on top of existing paint will result in the paint chipping easier and the chips will be larger. Until I left that industry a couple years ago, there were no paints that quite matched the hardness and durability of OEM paint (unless that's changed since). I could never get quite a clear answer from my management or from our PPG supplier, but it's thought it could be because they are using paints that don't have to abide by the same VOC laws that aftermarket paint companies have to (like PPG, Dupont, etc.). Also, depending on the thickness of the stripe, you could end up with build-up and a pretty noticable line in the clearcoat from it. In addition, clearcoat (well, assuming you're going to apply clearcoat over them) is not entirely clear - it has a little amber tint to it, and I've seen the addition of clearcoat alone change the color of the panel that was cleared compared to the original panels adjacent to it. I honestly hope you find what you want and that it works to your liking. I only wanted to offer you things to consider and perhaps bring up with your shop before getting too far into this. Good luck and take some pics' and post up when you're all done

^Excellent and wise information. One of my friends had center stripes painted down his white '98 Camaro and you could definitely see a bump in the paint on the edges of the stripes. Not sure how he had it painted, but personally, I would've just done vinyl.

this is just my .02
I like vinyl stripes for one reason. . . they can be removed and you can put new DIFFERENT stripes on the car when 1. They Chip 2. You want new ones. Granted the painted stripes look better, but I rather have the option of changing my mind years down the road with out painting the whole car.

Man, I really wanted red stripes. So, it's wiser to go with the stickers than paint?
