However, before you crucify GM or Akerson, please remember that every CEO has touched on this, including Mulally if I recall correctly. Even Lutz has said it.

Now what you are all missing is what CAFE is doing. CAFE is forcing everybody to build and sell smaller cars. But if gas stays in the 3 to 4 dollar range, what customer will buy a smaller car? Full Size Truck sales are still cruising right along at 4 bucks per gallon.

I don't think Akerson is suggesting that they tax us just because he thinks we should pay more taxes.

He is trying to make a point with the Government that if you are removing the free market from the manufacturers, you have to take the next step.

CAFE doesn't care if gas goes down to $2/gallon. It is driving draconian measures that will not be cheap and are causing ALL OEMs to spend and invest in technlogies that are being required to meet CAFE, not market demands.

Are any of you demanding a 62 MPG car? Are any of you demanding a car or truck with less than 100 g of CO2 output? No, it's being legally mandated. But if you aren't demanding it, are you willing to pay for it? Not likely.

So, yes, be POed, just not at GM or the other OEMs. This is just the natural discussion that has to happen when you legally require the auto companies to produce cars that the customer isn't demanding, asking for or more importantly, willing to pay a premium for.
Really?

If gas stays at $3 to $4/gal, MORE people will buy smaller vehicles because they're fuel efficient. You're suggesting that an increase in prices will force people to buy smaller vehicles, yet you claim to support the free market. What about the free market in regard to the consumer?

of course GM would want a higher gas tax.

But the real problem with that is, people already are driving their "guzzlers" you're going to put a lot of the country's poorest in pain because they can't afford to buy a new car. And even if they could, it'd probably still take years to recoup the cost in gas savings from the minimum $13,000 sticker price of a new car.

A higher gas tax would also increase the cost of commodities as shipping costs would skyrocket overnight. Once again, putting the squeeze on the poor who have a larger percentage of their income going to food.

That is such a one-sided view, it's not even funny.

Basically the gas-tax would take the weight off of GM's shoulders when it comes to offering competitive and fun fuel efficient cars that people would want to buy. GM could keep pumping out Aveo-like cars that sucked but were cheap and people would buy them because that's all they could afford.

"Akerson isn't the first auto exec to float the idea of a gas tax to encourage consumers to buy fuel-efficient vehicles. Ford Chairman Bill Ford Jr. has previously advocated a gas tax increase."

You guys have to understand, he (as well as Bill Ford Jr.) is doing what is best for his company.

Having the government apply CAFE rules to GM cost GM money to develop these cars.

He would much rather see some other method of making the consumer buy more fuel efficient cars. Easiest way is to make gas so expensive they have no other choice.

Given these two types of options, every CEO of every company in America would agree with this type of thinking.

You can say you would not consider buying a GM as a result, but with Ford saying the same and Dodge certainly on board, what are you going to end up buying?

I WILL NOT be buying another GM, Ford, or Dodge vihicle. They think the economy sucks now, wait till they have to lay off thoussands of overpaid union employees because people are boycotting them. There are other vehicles that get the job done. Sure, they may be as cool, but they work and they dont want to hurt peoples wallet.
