Really?

Read this blurb just now and thought it was quite odd. It can't be because of popularity cuz there are a lot of lower volume models in here:

10 most-expensive cars to insure
The 10 vehicles that account for the highest dollar amount of losses for insurance companies (starting with the most expensive) are:

1. Subaru Impreza WRX 4WD
2. Scion tC
3. Hyundai Tiburon
4. Mercedes CLS class 4dr
5. Suzuki Forenza
6. Honda Civic Si
7. Dodge Charger
8. Nissan 350Z
9. Chevrolet Cobalt
10. Suzuki Reno

I believe the WRX... a few of my friends had them and thought they were rally champs (and wrecked 'em)

I went from a Honda Civic EX with full coverage to the Camaro with the exact same coverage and my insurance rates actually went DOWN.

The top three are directly marketed towards first time drivers...the Mercedes must also attract a "younger less experienced driver" than traditional Merc drivers. (Well not so much the Subie...but that is a younger crowd that likes to play Rally Champ at the Walmart...)

The rest of the list is pretty much 100% "kid cars" for first time drivers and college aged people

List makes sense to me.

A lot has to do with frequency of accidents involving these cars compared to number sold, along with cost of repairs. may also have to do with medical costs from injuries recieved.
Everyone knows a Mercedes is very expensive to repair. many of those on the list are bought as young peoples cars, and some of the others are cars that are promoted as performance cars and people see the commercials showing them being driven wildly and think they can do the same things with theirs, but fail to realize those commercials are done with a professional driver on a closed course. Do not try this at home LOL...

Yep. My graduating class had 550 some kids, I'd bet at least 200 of them had some version of a civic.

Sometimes it's true! I've been around BMW owners that act like pricks! LOL

The WRX being at the top of the list doesn't surprise me at all, however I'm surprised that the Evo isn't even on this list. I was debating about getting my Camaro or the Evo X and my insurance company wanted over $400 more for the same coverage on my Camaro, and that's being over 25 years old and a squeaky clean driving record!

Insurance rates are not based on popularity of car models...

They're based on actual loss data, so these are the models that bring the largest ($$$) claims. Not surprising that they might include cars favored by younger drivers.

Yeah I can see that. If I had to come up with reasons (based on my own opinions of the cars)

  1. People want to believe they're rally drivers
  2. It's a small revvy sporty looking, uncomfortable, Japanese car. Perfect for "ricing"
  3. A sporty looking, relatively low priced V6, more popular with teens than adults.
  4. It's an expensive car for people who trust the car over their own skill to keep them safe and out of accidents.
  5. Cheap car for teens(?)
  6. Gotta go with a combination of number 2 and number 5
  7. It's a muscle car for guys who have given up. "I wanted a 2 door muscle car like a Camaro, Challenger or Mustang... But my wife wouldn't let me." Every so often their ambition peeks out and eclipses their abilities and it pushes insurance for the car up across the board. :p
  8. I've never known a Z owner who didn't believe they were God's gift to everyone and their car was God on wheels.
  9. A low priced, semi-sporty car popular with teens?
  10. No clue

Once again, my (fairly jaded) opinions only. So probably completely way off base. :p

That would explain why my wife's 4 door cobalt costs more to insure then my camaro. Thanks for providing this, always thought she was hiding speeding tickets.

Around here, there are at least as many boy-racer EVOs as STI's. Almost surprised that we don't see some form of the 240sx either, with how popular they are for drifting.

Interesting list, wonder how long till the V6 Camaro gets on it.

Also remember that claims are medical as well as repairs. You'll notice that a lot of these vehicles are smaller, compact cars. They just don't hold up in accidents, people get hurt, and then the insurance companies have to pay. Thankfully, our Camaros are pretty safe cars.

Since that list has nothing to do with the Camaro ... moved to General Automotive/Other Cars
