Transmission Fluid Change

I was changing my oil for the first time the other day and was looking at how to change the transmission fluid. Where is the fill point on a L99? I assume you have to remove the pan to change the fluid. What is that big bolt on the bottom of the pan?

Thanks.

Bill

Ok the big bolt on the bottom of the pan is a drain plug, so you don't have to drop the pan every time you wanna change the fluid only when you wanna change the filter and like any auto tranny I've every worked on you fill it from the dipstick opening with a funnel the exacty amount of tranny fluid you have to put into it is listed along with other useful info is in your owners manual !!

I did a cursory check for a dipstick, but came up short. I didn't look real hard though. Where can one find the tranny dipstick?

If it's the same as the G8, and I bet if is, you can find it in your dreams. Fm doesn't trust us to put the right fluid in. Checking /adding is a major pain.

Sealed unit, there is no dipstick for it. You drain it and then you have to have a pump to pump it back in. I am leaving that up to my dealer, do not want to F'up the tranny.

It isn't sealed, simply lacks a stick.

OK where do you put the fluid? Is it like the rear end with a fill and overflow plug?

Anyway, the big "bolt" thing (a tube actually running up into the pan) is actually used to tell when the trans is full. If full with this removed some fluid will come out. It will NOT drain the trans or even the pan.

The fill point is supposedly on the right side of the trans just above the top of the pan. Very hard to see...I still have not found it, tho I haven't had mine on a lift with time to search for it....

So I guess you have to take the pan off to drain. I will have to look the next time I am under there. I guess you have to pump the fluid into the fill hole.

Yes, drop the pan to drain some and change the filter. Still have not been able to ascertain whether or not our TC has a drain as well. A hand or air driven pump is def needed to refill.. Don't see this happening on the ground or ramps, gonna need a lift. What a PITA....

Does anyone have a picture of the fill plug? Is it like the plugs on the rear end?

Bill

Assuming it's like the 6l80 it's a little plastic plug. Pulls out with fingers. Passenger side of trans near front on top.

It is a 6L80E I think so it is probably in the same location.

Thanks.
