Cammed engine

I've been looking at videos of cammed engines and realized that they are LOUD. Is it just the nature of the cams, or are their ways to make it still have the badass sound just not as loud? Does exhaust play into it a lot?

the volume is not affected by a cam.

Cammed cars are louder usually because they (the installers) up the compression, open the exhaust valve earlier or a number of other reasons, during the install. The cam, in and of itself, does not make the engine louder. It's the result of everything you need to do to make the cam work that makes it louder.

From what I learned from my husband, if you go with a smaller lift cam with less duration, you'll have the cammed sound but it won't be nasty loud. I can't answer in any more detail as this is the extent of my knowledge which I learned from listening to my hubby talk about cams for the past 6 mos...lol.

I would have to disagree with pretty much everything you just said. You don't need to do anything to a car to put a cam in except possibly valve springs. The loudness before and after will change zero.

My wife (Prostock69) was writing what I was saying to her. Your correct in saying that the cam in and of itself will not make the engine louder. I was trying to convey the fact that the increase in compression that is NEEDED for a longer duration cam and that (along with cam timing) is what makes the engine louder. Seeing as how the LS3 and even more so the L99 have limited valve lift with stock pistons the only way to change the pumping efficiency of the engine is to increase duration and you must increase compression relative to the increase in duration or the engine will be a dog.

I'm with you. I still feel that with a moderate cam you will get a bit of sewing machine noise happening at the motor but the sound level from the exhaust will remain as close to stock as detectable by the ear.

I think that is what the poster was asking. We just got a little more detailed than needed.

Darin, everytime I see your photo, I think of Edward Norton. (What would Tyler do with a new Camaro...?)

That's the ultimate compliment. Halarious, yet very true.

I get that all the time. You think that picture looks like Ed Norton you should see me in real life! I get my hair real cut short and people look at me like I am the guy from American History X.

+1 on Darin's Cam description.. I didnt decide to go with a quieter catback because my motor produced the same volume after the camswap. It was just enough to create drone-city. Now im a magnaflow owner :-/

I noticed no difference at all. You guys have not heard drone until you have owned a C6 vette. These cars are very quiet in comparison. I guess it just boils down to what you are familiar with.

I am going to have to disagree with everyone here, and say cammed cars ARE louder

I just so happen to have a few clips of my car before and after my h/c swap

The compression did not increase with the new heads (due to possible ptv cleareance issues)

Full exhaust:

After heads/cam:

You make your own decision... I think it's louder.

I have a drone at 68-70mph. I have to drive 73mph to get rid of it. The speed limit around here is65mph. I will just tell the cop I cant drive 65!
The drone is bad enough that my 8 year old wears head phones. LOL
I just say, Oh well and keep on driving but after about an hour it gets to you. I am going to invest in some noise reduction mating. A cam and some healthy compression made my car frickin LOUD as hell!

Wouldn't the drone be caused more from the exhaust than the cammed engine itself?
