20" wheels and potholes

I have the 20" wheels with goodyear eagle f1 run flat. Was just wondering if you hit a pothole (about 1-2 " depth around here) will it break the rim?

It sure sounds like it is going to, when you hit one!

I bought some takeoff OEM 18" wheels and tires on eBay and the ride difference is astounding. No more cringing when I hit a bridge ramp or pothole.

I did have a 20" wheel crack but it was covered under warranty. Looked like manufacturers defect.

+1

It feels and sounds terrible, but nothing bad has happened yet. I busted a brand new Nitto Invo on a pothole a few years back on the 5th gen 20's but the rim was fine.

Had hit a pothole few months back on the stock 20's and put a golf ball sized bubble on the sidewall of the tire.

I’ve also bulged a tire on larger wheels (not the Camaro fortunately), but haven’t damaged a wheel yet.

I've hit a few with no tire or wheel problems.

20" wheels and potholes

Don’t forget wheels can be professionally repaired and refinished. Depending on the quality of shop it may cost a couple hundred ($200) but it beats buying a brand new wheel. Some shops will also mount and balance the tire onto the repaired wheel included in that cost.

By the time the wheel has to get repaired the tire is probably mangled. If you find yourself in this situation, consider getting road hazard protection on your next tires. Read the disclaimer for what road hazard covers though. I have found Discount Tire (or Discount Tire Direct) to have the best coverage and most simplistic process for road hazard protection plans.

At 1-2" pothole i wouldn't worry too much LOL. I live out here in NYC area. The roads are the worst they ever been in many years. I hit some 4"+ pot holes with no damage to the rims. To be honest i am more concerned with the tires but ever since i went with A/S continentals DWS06's stock size for the SS wheels its been nothing but pleasure compared to the GY's. I definitely wouldn't worry too much on it though and like others said the wheels can be fixed for under $200 without doubt, at least in my neck of the woods...

you can easily buy takeoff OEM wheels on Ebay, cheaper than repairing. I bought 4- 18” wheels and tires with 200 miles on them for $450.

(1LE Rims & tires are different so YMMV)
Hit some potholes, but the one that killed it was when construction crews removed the top layer of asphalt and didn't smooth the transition between the bottom and top layers..

All 4 rims bent, had a decent vibration while driving around. Had to get them all repaired, a lot cheaper than replacement and the shop did a good job

1" probably nothing, 2" at speed, yeah some cheap made wheels with no safety certifications probably wouldn't like that too much.

You get what you pay for. Cheap wheels won't hold up and are more likely to crack, but well made Forged wheels can take abuse all day long and would bend before cracking so that you can still drive. Cracked wheel looses air immediately so take that into account.
