I got pulled over for speeding, I didn't get a ticket for that but did get on for no front plate, I just latched mine on with 3'' toggle bolts with the toggle turned around and put them through the bottom grill and tightened them up. no problem with the plate staying in place or scratching up the fascia.

How many license plates am I required to display?

State law requires that you display two (2) license plates, one to the front and one to the rear. Placement or mounting of license plates is not defined.

*This guidance is referenced in TXDOT's requirements to properly display the registration certificate. DPS does not inspect the license plate itself, but instead inspects the license plate lamp.

  • View Department Rules/Regulation Inspection criteria
View 04.20.00 Details of Inspection & Search for 20.18 License Plate Lamp
This means you can put it in the window in Texas as long as it's visible

That is still illegal in Texas

Hunt County Deputies just love my car with no tag on front and GA Plates, been pulled twice in three months, cause ..."the couldn't read the state on my plate"... Rockwall City Cops no issues, most seem to like the car.

Unfortunately, I got nailed about 2 months ago for no front plate with a written warning. Luckily, here in New Brunswick, Canada, we now have seasonal plates and are only given one plate...the only drawback in I now have to pay an extra $50 each year to have one less plate on my car, for 7 months, than everyone else.

Just another example of governments and their money grabs!

Good luck with that. It does say the plate can't have a covering that distorts. While the windshield should not distort it much... it does cover it.

The worst you'd get is wasted time pulled over..... then wasted time going to court. It does say if it is fixed before the court date......

I was pulled over today by an officer in Helotes (suburb of San Antonio) and my wife was pulled over by DPS a few months ago, both were just for failure to display front plate and both resulted in warnings. I have been stopped for speeding in the Camaro by S.A. officer and he didn't even mention the plate. I think most officers have better things to do and don't have that feeling they have to "prove" something.

Take note..... if an officer pulls you over for breaking the law, he is not trying to prove anything. He is doing his job.

I was pulled over by a DPS northwest of Houston. When I showed him the remote controlled hideaplate, he laughed - but still gave me a written warning.

DPS pulled me over less than a week after I bought the car and gave me a warning. But I have not been pulled over since. Which kind of surprises me since the stretch of I-35 i drive to work on is VERY heavily patrolled. I prob pass at least 4 troopers a day (2 each way) 5 to 6 days a week.
