better or worse ?

I have 3.45 gears in my auto. I haven't ran it at the drag strip yet. Would I get better times with 3.91 gears ?

Not if it will cause you to need to shift into another gear. What are RPM you crossing the finish line at?

How much power are you making? If you don't plan on going past 500 rwhp the 3.91's would help if you were able to get traction.

3.91's will help you down the track. The question is will it push u into 5th.
This is a question that many of us bolt on only guys are toying with, but nobody knows Bc nobody has successfully done it.
By next year I will for sure put this theory to the test. Bc I will switch to 3.91's right before I go cammed. And I will see if it can be done.

So the answer is, it's a crap shoot at this point.
Which is why I asked what converter u are running.

We need much more info from the OP before a decision can be made. Where's he shifting at, the crossing rpm now like someone said,he's prob still in third with those bolt ons, if not hes barely in 4th and killing his times. Tires being used, the 3.91 and 6l will need a sticky tire. Future mods...

With the 3.91's he may not make enough power and get caught crossing in 4th at 5200 rpm which would kill him.

I am on a stock converter and will not go over 500 whp. I haven't ran it yet with the 3.45s so I don't know what the shift point will be. I am concerned with hooking up

Try the 3.45's and get some info. A 3.73 might be a better option.

I was looking at the fact that he's bolt ons only in his sig. So rwhp is gonna be no more than 370-380. And also assuming that he's running at least a stock height tire, the only way it's possible to run 3.91's on an A6 with just bolt ons is with a locked converter. If he's running any tire shorter than stock, no possible way it will not put him in 5th.

Stock converter, you will be best off with 3.73.

He wants a cam so figure about 460 rwhp or so.

I would say if your gonna go cammed, then definitely 3.91's would be a good gear assuming the cam you select will build hp to at least 6600rpm. Shouldn't be a problem.
I thought you were asking the question based on your current set up. If you are currently running 3.45's with bolt ons only, I wouldn't swap gears until you do the cam.
