I'm trying to understand how it all works

I currently have the exhaust upgrade from GM but I personally think it was no where close to being worth it. I'm a beginner at understanding exhausts and everything so bare with me and please correct me if I'm wrong.

You have the catalytic converters followed by a resonator and then it splits to both sides of the car and right before the exhaust tips you have the mufflers. From what I understand you can change the mufflers and achieve a different sound from your car. I believe that the gm exhaust upgrade is exactly this (new mufflers which replace the old ones and then new tips).

I was then thinking what if I remove the resonator instead of doing a muffler delete because I don't want all the money (which was wasted anyways) from the gm upgrade to go down the drain. I also read that if you get rid of the resonator you should replace it with an x-pipe? Correct? So basically, does it make sense for me to get a resonator delete and replace it with an x-pipe and keep the new mufflers from the gm upgrade?

I know everyone says it is cheap do to either a resonator or muffler delete. You have to pay more though for the x-pipe right?

Once again, please correct me if I made a mistake because I literally just learned all of this stuff yesterday.

your GMPP mufflers or "axle back" will sound much better the more you improve the rest of the exhaust.

If it were me. I'd go the X pipe route. Not only will you get better performance but the sound is usually better then just a resonator delete.

the x pipe cost around $150 and it is usually less then $100 to have it put on. this will change the sound a little. I would try that before any muffle changes sense you already spend the money on the GM upgrade.

Thanks for the quick reply. So I if a call to get this done I tell them I want to replace my resonator with an x-pipe?

I'd find a shop that can sell ARH, Kooks, Borla, Stainless Works, or any of the other exhaust companies. There are a ton of shops in the houston area who have access to a bunch of different X pipes and can give you an idea on what they've used.

I'll have Mlee come in here and take a look. I'm sure he knows who you can trust in the Houston area.

I'm actually in San Diego right now haha. I go to school here so I would rather get this done before the summer. I appreciate it though.

I have another question, do x-pipes from different brands sound different from each other?

Not as much as the axle back and headers do.

X-pipes areabout the most similar piece between manufacturers.

Then you want to be carefull in just removing that resonator. That is what is keeping your motor from sounding really bad when in the AFM 4 cyl mode. Unless you plan on using a tuner to turn off the AFM, I'd be real carefull with exhaust mods. With the AFM still in place, it's going to need some decent resonator and muffler volume to avoid droning real bad. Maybe a catback system designed for the L99 with a resonated X pipe? Get a complete system designed specifically for no drone with the L99.

Do I have to order one online or do some shops (wherever I get it installed) just have them in stock?
