Very cool tech. article!

If history is any indication the LT1 will not be available outside Corvette until 15' model year at the earliest (circa LS1, 97' vette, 98' Camaro).

And may not be in Camaro until the next generation, what model year we go to gen 6 may dictate that.

Any one else catch the boss 302 mistake? Not a supercharged engine.
DOHC, 11.1, and 7500rpm is what gives it that 444hp.

Long live the LS7, and 427ci of beast!

Forum members-

Tom Henry asked me to post here about the engine in the '14 SS.

When the LS7 story was researched, GM had not announced the powertrain in the SS. In fact, GM has not yet officially released any powertrain info. I said in the LS7 article that it was a "...good bet." the LT1 would be in Camaro for MY14.

Not.

It was a bad bet. Won't be the first time I've bet wrong and likely not the last.

The '14 Dealer Order Guide (unknown when it was issued, but it was probably sometime between when the LS7 story was submitted for coding and now), lists the LS3 as the SS engine.

I'm sorry for any confusion the speculation caused.

Great information. Thanks for the effort Hib.

If I read this correctly, the LS7's for the Z28 are already produced with the Wixom operation now shut down and in the process of moving to Bowling Green. If that's correct the potential number of Z28's is already known. Do I have this right?

Great article thanks! As a lifetime machinist, I can appreciate the barriers and challenges they had machining and manufacturing the parts. Great solutions too, well-thought out. Titanium is a very unique material as stated in the article. I am a big fan, easy to machine once you figure out how to keep it from wanting to catch fire!

That engine is already a classic.

Not sure if production has ended or not, but I'll inquire. My understanding is the PBC doesn't open in Bowling Green until Q1 of 2014.

Confirmed that LS7 production is still underway at GM Powertrain's PBC. It will continue through October 2013. After that, PBC will shutdown and move to Bowling Green Assembly. Dave Tatman, the plant manager at BG Assy, stated last week that it will open, per the previously announced schedule, in Q1 of 2014. Tatman also implied that the "Engine Build Experience," which was an available option with Corvette ZR1s, Z06es, Grand Sports with LS3 manuals and COPO Camaros, will eventually be part of the PBC at B.G.

Experienced GM watchers, should see that as a "clue" as to the engine in the "next" Corvette "Z model".

How many LS7 motors do they build a day?

Are they building production motors, crate motors or both?

Tom,

When will you be able to place a Z/28 order?

Capacity at PBC has been 15 engines a day. Up until about the end of Feb, that was a mix of LS3 dry sump, LS7, LS9 and COPO engines. At this point, it's LS7s and, perhaps, a few COPO engines.

Both, but likely a lot more Z/28 engines than crate motors.
