Tire Pressure Reading
Not sure if this is considered Mechanical or not, so I'll try my hand in the General forum.
How reliable are the electronic TPM sensors? I'm accustomed to checking my tires with pencil gauges, but they are hit and miss with some of their readings, and I figured if the car is doing the work for me, then why bother. |

Mine normally are within 2-3 psi of what my gauge says when I check them. Sometimes the car is higher, sometimes lower. I wouldn't rely on them to get an accurate reading of exact psi, just use them as a quick reference of if they need air or if you have a flat.

I use an analog gauge for mine. Mine is usually within 1psi of the tpms when cold.

TPMS on all my vehicles typically read about 2 psi less than any of my actual gauges

Same here, I just installed new TPMS's, old ones lasted 10yrs, and the dash readout is within 2 psi of what my dial gauge would read at the tire when warmed up or cold.

I too found the TPMS sensors pretty close to the 'analog' gauge.

I think the TPMS sensors are actually designed to show less than actual pressure. This will trigger a low pressure warning well before the ACTUAL tire pressure is dangerously low.

Toyotas have a low pressure threshold set around 27.5 psi to set tire light. They are pretty close to car and my digital gauge at work. I wouldn't say set lower cause then tires would be over inflated a bit going off car gauges.

The right front reads 24 on the dash but 42 with a TPG.

Do all of your tires read correct? They weren't rotated and never paired were they?

I would think that 24 on the dash would give you a warning. May want to do the "re-learn" procedure. My '15s require a special tool. Not sure about your '13.
