underdrive pulleys

This question is for the engine builders and tuners , are underdrive pulleys worth the money for a small rwhp gain ?

if you do a dollar per hp compaired to everything else then yes.

underdrive pully is 200 / 5(hp) = $40 per hp

headers $1200/ 30(hp)= $40 per hp

cai 300/ 15(hp) = $20 per hp

Supercharger $7500(installed)/ 175(hp) = $42.85(per HP)

I can keep going but its not bad

Has anyone seen a negative effect with installing the underdrive pulley? Overheating, Low Alternator Output, etc.

i had one on my 4th gen, only downside i noticed was low light output (interior and headlamps) at idle

there was also the crankbolt that would sometimes loosen up causing the pulley to move and the belt to come off, but i dont think that is a common issue

NO over heating... I have the SLP Underdrive Pulley. Alternator still maintains the 13V charging... the only problem you may have is over spinning the Alternator..
Just get you a smaller pulley for the alternator... and all is solved..

how could you over spin the alternator with the slp underdrive pulley,, you realize the underdrive pulley spins all the accessories slower than the factory crank pulley.

on some vehicles when you buy an underdrive pulley set they give you a underdrive crank pulley and a smaller (overdrive) alternator pulley to bring the alt speed back up to factory speed,,

the 2010 camaro only gets a smaller crank pulley that spins all the accessories slower, and so far no one has reported that the voltage has dropped enough at idle to worry about an alternator pulley,, but there is no way you will overspin the alternator with a underdrive crank pulley

I dont think its worth spending a couple hundred for just 5hp. I know it adds up over time but you are not going to feel 5hp diff in a 400+hp motor.

I'd rather spend 1k and get a significant upgrade but thats just me.....who knows, im sure i will do this down the road after i get the major things out of the way hahaha

I really thought about getting an underdrive pulley, but I opted out of it.

My 2SS is laden with electronics. WHen I'm sitting in traffic with the heat on, wipers going, headlights on, heated seats going, rear defroster on, CD player going, on star working, bluetooth going, etc.... I imagine the alternator would begin to struggle.

My old LT1 stripper was just fine with UDP's, but this car has so many electronics, I don't think I want to stress any systems with voltage irregularities.

I think he meant, it's worth it because you're taking everything apart anyway, might as well swap it in.
