^^^Great points from a road course perspective. Makes a lot of sense.

This is really easy.

If you want a DD, buy the ZL1.

If you just want an occasional toy for tracking, or you are buying it to try to sell it later as a collector car, buy the Z28.

I had a 13 ZL1 for 3 years. Currently have a 15 Z/28. If I had to pick I'd go with Z/28.

Taillights wouldn't be a deal breaker for a lot of folks... There will need to be a significant amount of change in the body design to warrant such a decision if the price difference is so small in this case.

From what i understand the Zl1 makes a better track car in the long run.
The Z28 for maintenance cost would kill. The carbon brakes are better suited for street use and will last for ever. Now if you track maybe 2 3 times a year than the Z28 is a better option. The carbon brakes start to wear at continuous high temps. So a few track days here and there, they should last for years. On the other hand a set of Zl1 brake pads and rotors are about 1500 or so. I say stick with a zl1 and mod it for track use.

IMO, these two cars shouldn't be priced anywhere near $1,000 of each other. What is the price of each?

The OP said track day once in a while and mountain roads....that is no where near enough to warrant the track power of the Z-28, period.

I get it, I wanted a Z28 because they look bad ass and I love the LS7, but I bought a ZL1 because it's a better car all around. Easy to make HP, comfy, much faster out of the box on the street on the street, interior is quiet....The Z28's positives are track capability which you've basically said you wouldn't need, so other than that, it looks awesome and you'll probably be the only guy with one in a huge mile radius, very rare.

And as far as price? Either that ZL1 is over priced as hell or the Z28 is a steal. A ZL1 like you described should be around 40k for a great deal and 45k for too much, at least where I'm at (Bought a '13 Vert with 2900 miles for 41k just months ago). Z28 is 52-56K+ as of now.

Z/28 if your plan is to track the car a lot, like every weekend, and if you're a Pro Driver or trying to become a Pro Driver for a living.

If you're just a novice who likes to track their car once in awhile, then definitely go with the ZL1. Your average guy will get pretty much the same exact numbers every lap no matter which car they are driving.

The only time you will see a slight track time difference is if you are capable of pushing and keeping the car at its limit. You're only as good as your ability, and the average guy isn't better than either of these cars ability.

So with that being said, the ZL1 is going to be much better as a daily driver, more comfortable, AC, and a decent sound system.

Oh one more thing, hubby took me on a closed road yesterday so I could give launch control and the No Lift Shifting feature a couple tries.

Boy oh boy was that fun! Really a strange sensation I have to say. It just feels weird/crazy to keep it at full throttle and then push the clutch and shift, drop the clutch and still have it to the floor. But it does work, got some nice tire chirps between shifts too!!!

Which ever the OP chooses it will be fun fun fun to drive!
