SS is a muscle car. Zl1 is probabaly a muscle car but starts to hit on lower level supercar performance.

The reality is as awesome as the ZL1 is for a camaro some of the other cars that are out there now eat its lunch pretty easy.

To me right now if you are not not running 11sec pass and lapping the ring sub 7:30 not sure you can say you are a supercar.

the ZL1 offers 5 year old supercar perfromance at a budget price.

The Camaro does have #1 and #2 covered, but it handles great, brakes great, it's good on NVH, and amazing on long drives. I'd say it's more of a grand tourer/sports car than muscle car. A super car it is not. And as amazing as the ZL1 is, it is also not a super car. Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe once it's out, it will dominate GT-Rs, 911 GT3s, and the like...probably not, but it would be cool.

The ZL1 BRIDGES THE GAP AND COVERS BOTH. It is a cross generational vehicle that connects the performance dots for both professional and layman drivers. If it were a shoe, it would be called a "Cross Trainer". But since it's a Super Awesome Muscle Car (thank you austinjames) let's just say it will be a rare production muscle car or super car that will cross it's path in any venue and come away without respect! Even sitting still. IMHO.

Oh, and for the record, let me say this. I think those of you who know what I am talking about will agree: I would NOT WANT to drive a stock 1969 Camaro (even a stock Z28), Chevelle, GTO, GTX, Roadrunner, etc at 140 MPH for any length of time or around a challenging roadcourse. Most of those cars were true MUSCLE CARS of the era but not suited for much else than 1/4 mile. The current ZL1 almost has some NASCAR durability (ok, not purist intended) intertwined with Quarter Mile Monsters! What more could you want? You are living in an awesome time!

First off we drive pony cars and they are a branch(well more of an association) of the muscle car world. Since mustang was first it started with them but once challenger and camaro were released it moved to all of them...Most true muscle cars were not street legal and pony cars are. I'm sure some real car guys know every detail of this history but our cars are descendents of the pony era.

And a link for more info http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pony_car

Hmmm, by your definition, some lamborghini Mercielagos, Porsche GT3 RS, Audi R8, Pagani Zanda, Jaguar XJ220 and even Z06s without cup tires can't be considered 'Supercars". I agree the ZL1 isn't a super car per se, but running the ring at 7:30 isn't exactly a scientific definition of a Super Car.

ALL I can add to this conversation at this point in time is that most of us wouldn't come close to achieving 7:41 if we drove the ZL1 on the ring. There might be a few. But for the most part I bet 95 / 100 would have a hard time driving it in 8:41. So, if true, does it matter?

I see the Carmaro as a multi-purpose performance car.

We've had this talk before I recall. If the camaro is holding true to its roots then its not a muscle car.

But.......the argument could be that since the camaro is no longer on the fbody platform, and that the current camaro is in fact considerably heavier than the previous fbody (and the muscle cars of the sixties and seventies) that it could be considered a muscle car. Also consider the fact that the traditional muscle car (intermediate sized two door coupe with a large displacement engine) no longer exists in the american car production market.

Additionally, the 5th gen camaro's platform was based on the Holden Monaro (gto), which was sized as an intermediate.

The question could be.....is the 5th gen a true camaro, or is it a newly resurrected muscle car??

Tough choice.
