Question about License Plates for Illinois

So here's my situation:

I currently live in Northwest Indiana and I;m moving to downtown Chicago at the beginning of May.

My Indiana plates need to be renewed by early May, and the cost of that in Indiana is almost $500! (Indiana has the highest cost for plates than any other, it sucks).

But, from talking to other people from Illinois plates would be under $100 and since I'll be living there I can make it work and save me some money.

My only issue is I really do not want to have a front license plate. Is is mandatory that you need a front license plate if the car is registered in Illinois? And if so, how does it work for cars that don't have front brackets to mount them? (obv. I'm not going to drill unnecessary holes in the front end).

Any insight on the Illinois license plate laws? Could I just technically leave the front plate in my glove box (heard some guys did that)?

Thanks.

Ya gotta have a front plate in Illinois. A proposed law to eliminate the requirement was recently defeated. Get a bracket that mounts to the lower grill.

Well i live on the southside of chicago and i have had my car for close yo 2 years now with no plate... but i did get a ticket for it last week lol

And i know for a fact if you are going to be living downtown then you should have a front plate because chicago is more strict than smaller towns

Can you get away for a while without getting pulled over? Yea but all it takes is one bored cop and there goes $120 and you have to wait for your license back in the mail

Or if the cop is nice he can drop it ti a parking ticket for $50 and you can keep your license

Being in the downtown area you will most definitely need that front plate showing I've received my share of warnings but I don't risk it anymore

Go on Ebay and get one of the hideaway license plate brackets. There are powered and unpowered ones.

If you are going to live in Chicago, be prepared for anything!

I personaly like the one that Bill Kay Chevrolet put on my front bumper. I think it is just the standard Chevy plate mount. I personaly don't care for the look of the lower grill mounted plates.

They will make you transfer your drivers licence first even though you have ninety days to make both your plate and DL match. I can't get the DMV to put an IL plate on my bike till I move my DL even though some how the dealer plated the car in IL over a year ago. I just can't find my birth certificate thus I haven't changed my DL.

I moved to Indiana last year but prior to that I lived in Illinois. 26 years on the road and I never ran a front plate or got a ticket for it (knock on wood).

I've seen some guys just mount it up in the front window on the passenger side ontop the dash? Maybe that'll work.
