Is a heavy cut like Menzerna 300 safe in a novice hands?

I have a buddy of mine that just bought a very nice BLACK 2006 Vette that I told him I would help him do the paint correction. It is in what I would consider to be pretty tough shape, no two bucket washes in this vettes past. My cars are pristine but I have only done my cars and I have had them since new on two of them and another was one year old and that one is black and it needed some minor help but it was not this far gone. I would call the paint a 6 it has some fairly significant swirls and a bunch of minor scratches.

Here is where I get a but nervous as a novice the most aggressive product I have used is Menzerna FG400 which is pretty easy to work with. I do not think this product will get the job done on this vette and I am wondering if a more aggressive product in the hands of a weekend warrior is trouble. Can I get myself in to trouble by stepping up to Menzerna Super Heavy Cut 300? Is this product for the big boys only? I am sure if I worker hard enough the FG400 would get the job done but I would rather work smart then hard!

So much for volunteering...Any words of wisdom here folks?

I would not mind messing my paint job up but I do not want to do it to a friends.

Im by no means a pro, but I would stick with the FG400.
if you need more cut you can step up to a orange microfiber pad, rather than using just an orange foam pad.
The MF pads give a bit more cut than the same color foam pad.

I just ordered an orange microfiber pad that is a good idea and I will give this a whirl. I think this is a safe approach using a product I am totally comfortable working with.

Start with the least aggressive method first. Work your way up from there until you either get the correction the owner is looking for or the level you're comfortable with. If correction comes from a process you're uncomfortable with, talk to the owner about it before proceeding. Even if you can't get 100% correction, the Vette will look better, perhaps he'll be happy with that, and your honesty.

I agree with your advise, my wife has a black car and I can get it to an 8 and she thinks it is a 10 so we are both happy. To get her car to a true 10 is above my ability and I do not have that amount of time to dedicate to getting it perfect.

If I'm not mistaken, I believe older vette's have ceramic clear coat on them, which is very hard paint.

I haven't tried the Menz 300, but have used Shine Supply Flat Top on a Mercedes and an Audi, both with ceramic clear. Finishes down almost LSP ready.

As with any paint your correcting for the first time, do a section, inspect your work, continue, or make changes if necessary.

If the FG 400 and your microfiber pad doesn't get the job done, shoot me a PM and I'll send you a small bottle of Flat Top.

Here's a pic of Flat Top used on trashed paint.
