Question The Leather Thread

Never had a leather interior. What do you think the best way to keep it clean and/or take care of it for a long life. What products do you use and why. I'll probably have my 2ss for 15+ years, just like my last one.

Thanks,
Lovestanda

I sound like a salesman for them, but I love Zaino's 'Leather Cleaner' and 'Leather Conditioner'.

I looked at 'Connelly', but the cost was a little expensive for me.

I'm sure there are other good quality products available.

As I said, I prefer Zaino. It's worked the best for me, and leaves a small that actually does smell like new leather.

As far as how often to clean, if your car is used daily, I'd recommend once a month do a good cleaning/conditioning.

The last 6 cars that I have owned all had leather seats and I have found that the Meguirs brand leather conditioner works great. And it is sold at Wal-Mart or Target stores for less than $5.

What part of the seat is true leather? Isn't it just the part you sit on, and even that has a vinyl coating for protection? I have no idea these are just things I hear about here and there but I'm sure that would make a difference as to which cleaning products to buy.

Bring it by and I'll help/show ya'!

As far as the seating surfaces are concerned, speaking only from experience with the 4th gen., the seating area was leather.

Yes just the seating area's are leather (the middle of the seats). And yes, leather seats for the past 10 years, possible for the last 15, are indeed coated with vinyl (even the leather parts). The only places you can get pure uncoated leather seats in a car now is in high end European cars and even they are changing over to coated vinyl seats. Most sites advise to use vinyl cleaners and conditioners instead of leather as the vinyl coating prevents the leather conditioner from being absorbed and just ends up on your clothes. If you've ever used leather conditioner on a seat and came back an hour or 2 later to find an oily feeling when you put your hand on the seat, this is why.

^ Thanks for the info Mr_Draco. So what would you recommend for cleaning the Camaro's leather seats?

This will actually be the first car I've owned with leather seats.

My parents own several cars with leather and they use Armor All (the same stuff you use on the dash).

EDIT: One thing I noticed I left out in my above post is how to tell if you have leather seats or vinyl coated seats. To do this, park the car in the shade or somewhere out of the sun to reduce the effects of evaporation. Put one drop of water (use an eye dropper if you need to) in the middle of the piece you are testing away from any stitching and put it on a level area so it won't run. Uncoated leather will absorb the drop of water in 10-15 mins.

And with a vinyl coat it would not absorb right? I have used some armor-all on my parents car to clean the leather, seems to work alright I guess lol so thats good to know.
