Transmission

So I've had my SS for about two and a half months now. I bought it with 8k miles and now have around 18. I'm just curious if the transmission ever gets any smoother. Obviously when it's cold it sounds pretty clunky. But I also have the 2nd gear grind. Shifting over 5k, if I'm really into it, it'll grind more often than not. Even make a mental note to bury the clutch in the floor. It ground so hard one time it kicked it out of gear. Felt terrible. So, the question is, has any body had a 2010 build with any grinding issues repaired under warranty? And if so, how difficult was it to get the dealership to fix? I know the synchros are different after 2011. Also, does the gearbox ever get any smoother? Thanks for any feedback you can give me.

i have a 2LT auto, but sounds like its got some issues. reason i say that is i test drove a 2010 ss manual in May, it had 71K miles on it, and that thing shifted so smoothly i couldnt belive it. i had not driven a stick in 15 years when my ex . had a 88 escort GT 5 speed. i couldnt shift that car. but this camaro was so easy, clutch, shift, etc. i was really impressed , especially with 71K miles. i didnt buy it as i wanted a new camaro, and a auto. but i think you need to take it to dealer with only 18K miles on it, especially get it checked before your warranty runs out.

OP, you have a problem. See your local dealership immediately.

There are truck loads of threads here on C5 about this issue. Welcome to the TR6060 club.

You may have just discovered why the car was traded in with only 8k miles on the clock. That said, go to your dealer and if you can prove that the issue exists (harder than it sounds) they may replace the syncros and blocker rings. This does not guarantee that the issue is solved but it's where they will begin.

Be SURE to find a good dealership to perform the work. I wish you the best of luck.

Take it to Gwatney in Jacksonville and ask for James or Dewayne. They won't jerk you around.

OP, it seems you're having a syncro issue. You've either chewed through it, or they were bad to begin with and they are only getting worse.

I would go to the dealership and tell them. If they come back and tell you they can't duplicate the issue, you leave the car there till they get it right and call Chevy Customer Service.

What you're experiencing is not acceptable, and it will not get better, it will get worse.

Hi PhilSS,

Please let me know if I can help schedule an appointment at your dealership. I would be happy to speak with them regarding the issue. You may send a private message at any time with your name, address, phone number, VIN, vehicle mileage, and name of preferred dealership. Thank you!

A lot of people abuse that 1-2 upshift. I've test driven a bunch of used cars over the years, and while I've never counted 'em, it's seemed that well over half all of the manuals had worn syncros going into second.

Mines awful as well, I tried switching to amsoil ATF and it just made it worse. I'm going to try a couple other oils and if that doesn't work I'm taking mine in as well. It just sucks because ill have to remove my lt headers, short throw shifter, skags eliminator, and basically everything else that they could say caused the issue :-/ but a few hrs if time is worth a free transmission I guess lol
