z28 was the regular v8 and ss was the top dog

when the 4th gen camaro was made, it was already on the chopping block. they came out with the v6 and the v8. v6 base model and the v8 Z28 top dog because they never planned to make 3 versions of the car. then in 96, SLP started doing option packages for Z28s, added intake, exhaust, hood, spoiler and some other things and rebadged the cars as SS's. then GM jumped on board and started sending the Z28s straight to SLP from the factory for the upgrades instead of owners having to wait for their Z28, then send it to SLP.

for the 4th gen, the SS was the top dog, but they are still SS/Z28s. this time around, GM is doing it right and going back to the roots of the car. building a base v6 and a top performing SS, leaving the top dog Z28 to come later down the line when they can sell enough of the base and SS's to warrant making a Z28.
